Teaching minds, touching hearts, transforming lives. Aside from the mastery of the subject being taught, developing a genuine bond between tutor and student, helping them apply or understand the gravity or importance of their study and why they should not take it for granted. In other words, helping them not only in the four corners of the…

Tutors should be able to provide students motivation, assistance and inspiration in all aspects of the learning environment. As someone who is still studying, I believe I am able to easily connect and communicate with students and be able to relate with them. This support will assist in building confidence. I definitely have the mathematical…

I think it's important to listen and observe, find out how a student learns, how they go about working on a problem, then use these observations to construct a way to better their understanding of the material. I'm an easy going guy, I try not to stress people out. I am able to understand and simplify Mathematics in a way that's easier to…

I believe a great tutor goes beyond just increasing a student's marks- they are able to act as a mentor and oversee a student's education holistically. For example, I also guided one of my previous students through his year 12 year, helping him with the university admissions process and scholarship applications, where he is now studying…

Making a student as confident as possible is the upmost important aspect of tutoring in my mind. This is because, no matter how many hours are spent studying, if a student is not confident within themselves, in exam settings they will constantly doubt themselves and make avoidable mistakes. Therefore, building students confidence is the most…

Inside Waratah WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex explored rates and ratios, including practical calculations on fuel and energy consumption and converting between units.

In Year 9, Mia worked through coordinate geometry by finding equations of lines and calculating gradients as well as x- and y-intercepts using graph sketches.

For Year 10, Ethan practiced normal distribution concepts such as z-scores, the 68-95-99.7 rule, and standard deviation, applying these to real data sets for context.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Mathematics, one student's confidence in exams dropped sharply after a disappointing test, leading her to overcomplicate questions and miss marks she otherwise knew ("she knows all the content well, but when gets into an exam she over complicated problems and stresses").

Another senior student regularly forgot the order of steps for standard deviation calculations during revision, which slowed problem-solving in class.

In Year 8 algebra lessons, forgetting to write out working or mixing up negative numbers led to repeated errors that went unnoticed until feedback was given.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student did not complete assigned homework on fractions and decimals; as a result, she struggled to spot number patterns and needed extra time revisiting basic place value during the session.

Recent Achievements

One Waratah West tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on rates and ratios—after struggling for weeks, she now solves these problems without hesitation and even got every question right last session.

Another high schooler, prepping for Year 12 trials, managed most of the revision questions solo this time after previously needing step-by-step help. Most revision completed independently marked a new level of confidence.

With younger students, one girl who found telling time confusing at first now completes time worksheets independently, using clock visuals to work out 'past' and 'to' times on her own. She has shown true independence with time concepts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lambton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Waratah West Public School.
