I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build understanding, confidence, and independence. It's important to explain concepts clearly so students understand the reasoning, not just the steps. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. A few of the most important skills for the field are patience and communication. Since you’re dealing with students and their weaknesses, you need to be patient in whatever circumstances arise. Additionally, the only way to do your job as a tutor is to convey tough…

It is essential for a tutour to try and ensure that they empower their student, by instilling confidence in them regarding their own ability. We should always lend an ear to hear their queries. Once they find us to to be comfortable, they would not feel bad to ask questions and solve their doubts. I think the most important thing is to keep the student calm rather than adding to their stress. If a tutor is tense or impatient, the student picks up on that so I make a point of staying calm and relaxed so they feed off that and feel at ease. The other big one is being able to break things down simply, explaining a concept in a way that's…

I find it important for tutors to be able to make a student comfortable to ask them questions and to give wrong answers. Without being able to acknowledge their own mistakes and see how they can do better, students will not be able…

The most important thing is truly caring about the student's needs and not just delivering the content so that whatever needs to be taught is "taught". Inside WareembaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Rose practiced multiplication using the column method for two- and three-digit numbers, then started long division, reinforcing skills with games and timed worksheets.

A Year 9 student revised trigonometry and probability questions to prepare for an upcoming exam, focusing on solving right-angled triangle problems and basic chance calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student worked through questions on finding the midpoint, distance, and gradient of a line given two points, applying these to graph linear relationships.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student tended to check every maths answer with me before moving on, showing hesitation despite correct work—this meant quiz time was spent seeking reassurance instead of practicing independently.

In Year 10, a missed assignment detail wasn't shared during sessions; as the tutor noted, "he would have benefitted from input," but did it alone and missed out on targeted feedback.

A senior student struggled with exam time management, having to rush sections after underestimating how long tasks like financial maths would take. The stress lingered as she recounted feeling pressed for time after the session ended.

Recent Achievements

One Wareemba tutoring session saw a Year 11 student move from relying on memorised rules to confidently breaking down differentiation problems step by step, even cross-checking with earlier concepts like Pythagoras when needed.

In Year 9 English, a student who used to struggle with essay structure is now independently using the P.E.E. format and can clearly explain her reasoning for each point.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often rushed through addition tasks surprised her tutor this week by pausing to double-check answers—spotting and fixing her own errors before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Abbotsford Public School.
