The reason why most students hire tutor is to be able to get assistance with the subject they need help the most and as a tutor the most important jobs is to be able to not only assist the student and establish their understanding but to be able to take the knowledge and be able to apply it not only on their studies but also the real world. As a…

A tutor must be able to grow and adapt with their student, adopting different teaching styles to retain knowledge for longer, and to promote a love of learning beyond high school studies. Knowledge becomes much more appealing and simple when you understand why you need it. I am very good at teaching maths concepts and chemistry specififically. Generally I feel I am good at understanding my…

To be able to mould and modify a lesson plan in accordance to what the student's need. Being compassionate and understanding their struggles and what they lack, going that little extra mile to help them push for them to get what they want with their grades. I am highly adaptable and am always thinking outside the box. I have a natural knack for…

The goal is to understand each student's needs and modify the approach as necessary. Students' personal and academic development is promoted by a supportive and upbeat learning environment, as well as by setting…

The actual academics itself, while being at the core of the tutoring, is not the most valuable aspect. From my experience, most students do not have the care or respect for their instructors, and mutual respect in particular is essential, because mutual trust is otherwise close to impossible for many people. You must find a balance between being…

Inside Waterford WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lucas focused on arithmetic with negative numbers and mastered order of operations through targeted problem sets.

For Year 8, Zane practiced solving equations involving algebra and explored Venn diagrams to understand set relationships visually.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Gurnoor covered key concepts around surds, rational and irrational numbers, as well as significant figures, revisiting recent test material for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned maths homework and, when asked, claimed it was done—yet division questions in the warm-up remained a challenge.

In Year 10 algebra, he's very good at solving questions but we're working on making sure he shows all the steps, as skipping working made it hard to catch sign errors.

For a senior student tackling logarithms, there was frequent checking of notes before each attempt rather than recalling rules independently.

Meanwhile, one primary student struggled to stay focused during online lessons; distraction meant less content covered and basic skills (like subtraction) remained shaky.

Recent Achievements

One Waterford West tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who, after struggling with algebraic working out, now talks through his problem-solving steps aloud—something he used to avoid—and shows clearer reasoning on paper.

Another high schooler began actively asking for help instead of guessing when stuck, which let him tackle mean and median questions with much less prompting than before.

For a younger student, mental maths practice is paying off: she's started adding and subtracting up to thousands using regrouping methods, needing fewer reminders and finishing her written problems more independently each session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Marsden Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Waterford West State School.
