I believe the most important thing is understanding a student, and to be in their shoes when tutoring them. I believe that it allows tutors to really gauge students into learning more efficiently. My strengths as a tutor is that I believe I can teach well. I can make problems easy for those I am tutoring and will be able to guide a student to the…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them completely understand the material. Not only so that they can do a specific question, the important thing is for them to understand the concept, so when they encountered different kind of question, they would know how to approach it. Furthermore, a tutor must adjust…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. A lot of students struggle because they lose confidence, so helping them feel encouraged and capable is just as important as teaching the content itself. A tutor should also focus on…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students become genuinely interested in learning and exploring concepts on their own. When students develop curiosity and confidence, they are more likely to engage actively and improve in the long term. Encouraging the right mindset is just as important as teaching content. Only when…

I believe the most valuable thing a tutor can teach is confidence in a student's ability to learn. Instead of simply providing answers or reinforcing the idea that thye must be perfect, a tutor should understand the reasoning behind their thinking. When students learn to recognise where they struggle and develop strategies to work through…

Not only teaching a subject, but making they more confident and independent. For me, the best teachers/tutors that I had were those that showed me the importance of having a "problem solving" mentality, instead of simply learning how to get some questions right. Having that listening ear for your student is important as every child is different. That listening ear will be helpful and important as this will give the student opportunities to explain themselves more…

Inside WaterwaysTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ethan practised writing numbers in expanded form and solved digit combination challenge questions that required using each digit only once.

For Year 10, Sarah worked on solving quadratic equations by factorisation and was introduced to the discriminant, applying these concepts directly to her schoolwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James focused on finding equations of lines given a gradient and a point, then continued assigned work on linear relations using his Easter homework sheet.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student frequently avoided writing out algebra steps, preferring to do calculations mentally—this made it hard to catch sign errors and led to confusion when checking answers ("he had the habit of trying to do all the steps in his head before answering").

In a Year 11 Physics session, equations from electromagnetism were only vaguely recalled unless prompted, as no organized summary or reference list was maintained.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student with creative story ideas found transferring thoughts onto paper challenging; great verbal detail vanished when faced with the blank page. Each instance meant time spent retracing rather than progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Waterways tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now confidently requesting clarification on using the calculator's shift function for inverse trigonometry—he then completed angle problems independently.

In Year 8, a student who used to guess at comprehension answers began searching for "hints" within texts and solved worded maths questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 4, once distracted during spelling activities, managed to write each target word three times as directed and sorted them into categories with much more focus than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aspendale Gardens Primary School.
