The most important things a tutor can do for a student are provide academic guidance, human connection, and consistency, and the combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. Some of my greatest strengths are that I'm very energetic and patient. I lean on these qualities heavily…

That is easy. The most important thing is to inspire them and engage their curiosity. To be more interesting than a teacher trying to teach a class, and to show the student /s that learning is beneficial, fun, and not-dreary schoolwork. Gamification can be used here, and exposing the student to new texts above the level they are used to, so as to…

I have experience in teaching young children on a service trip through my school in maths and english (5-10 years old). I achieved an ATAR in the 90's. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them feel confident enough in themselves and their abilities to succeed. A tutor should not simply give the answers to their students, but do what they can to provide the support for the students to reach the correct answers themselves. I am very patient; if a student cannot find the…

A tutor should be able to lift the confidence of a student; with the ability to detect their strengths, as well as listing potential weaknesses so that there is a level of realism when analysing one's raw ability in a subject. I have the ability to break concepts into small parts to increase the level of understanding for a student. Paired with my…

To listen and make the learning experience enjoyable. The best way to learn is to do it in a way that does not stress you out, make it easy to understand. To learn the nature of the student's mind and how their brain processes information, so that a lesson plan can be tailored to their specific needs. A tutor needs to be understanding, and respectful. They must realise that students don't all learn at the same pace and thus must be able to maintain the learning pace with their student. They must also be respectful that student's are trying their best and must not be too pushing and must remain patient with their student. I am knowledgable in…

Confidence is a key element that tutors can either instil or take away from a student. All children are born with a capacity to learn and it is our job to help them realise their great potential. In saying that, tutors must always be kind, encouraging and supportive of a child so that they can be confident enough to venture into the unknown and…

Active listening. I believe this is the most important trait and thing a tutor can do for a student. It is wise for a tutor to instill within the student a sense of excitement and confidence. Excitement stems from a meaningful process of learning, and confidence comes about at the solving of the process. Also important is the establishment of a pleasant rapport with the student. A tendency to burn the candle at both ends has in the past…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student love a subject because if this happens, the improvement will follow mechanically. A tutor needs to be able to successfully teach the student the material but also needs to provide the motivation and confidence a student needs to study and conquer any tests/exams. Students study around the clock, thus a tutor needs to be available when assistance is most required to provide the necessary support. Also recognise that many things…

Inside WatsoniaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student worked through chapter four on complex numbers and tackled vectors from chapter two, focusing on problem-solving with worked examples.

For Year 11, time was spent reviewing logs, exponents, and compound interest calculations, clarifying methods step-by-step.

A Year 6 student practised multiplying decimals using exponents and reinforced understanding of the 3x and 5x tables through targeted exercises.

Recent Challenges

Several process-related challenges emerged across different year levels.

In Year 11, a student tackling advanced algebra needs to slow down and write out each equation, as skipping steps in quadratic proofs led to hidden errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student struggled with work layout—her method for factorizing was hard for others to follow, making it tough to trace calculation paths.

For a Year 7 learner, not keeping diagrams bold and clear meant key features were missed when drawing geometric figures.

In upper primary, times tables revision often focused only on easier sets, so gaps remained with the 6x and 7x tables.

Recent Achievements

One Watsonia tutor recently saw a Year 12 student finally grasp de Moivre's theorem, confidently using it to multiply and divide complex numbers—something that had caused hesitation before.

In another session, a Year 10 student who used to rely on the tutor for every step with Pythagoras' Theorem is now solving problems independently and even checking their own work for errors.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised their tutor by breaking down an irregular area question into parts without prompting, after previously struggling to start these on their own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Watsonia Primary School.
