As a tutor, I consider it essential to establish a positive connection not only with the students but also with their parents. It is more significant for a tutor to offer support and guidance to students, leading them toward a beneficial path, rather than imposing additional pressure or burdens on them. To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. The last family I had tutored had told me that after my sessions with their son, he had stopped crying every time he had to complete his school homework. From this experience, I have come to…

A tutor should always motivate a student to have a specific goal and want to work towards it. Tutors must inspire their students to strive to achieve and to dream of a future where they are successful. Being organised is crucial. Giving a student time to reflect on what they have learned, by spending time during a lesson explaining their…

A tutor should be able to promote a growth mindset, where the student can learn from their own mistakes. It is important to assess the student and understand strengths and weaknesses before starting a lesson, and it is also crucial to assess the student after a lesson to measure the progress. A good tutor will be able to build confidence in the…

Building the student's confidence and knowledge are the two key aspects of being a tutor that I have found during my experience. One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel safe and confident in their learning journey. Being in leadership, I've seen how powerful encouragement and trust can be in helping someone grow. Role of tutor is not to make a student learn single subject, but understand students' learning rhythm and motivations. If you can't challenge student in learning path, it will benefit him in short run, but in long run he will fail miserably. Learning is the experience of fun and enjoyment. Hardworking and Preparation. Whenever I deliver speech or…

Inside WatsoniaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student worked through chapter four on complex numbers and tackled vectors from chapter two, focusing on problem-solving with worked examples.

For Year 11, time was spent reviewing logs, exponents, and compound interest calculations, clarifying methods step-by-step.

A Year 6 student practised multiplying decimals using exponents and reinforced understanding of the 3x and 5x tables through targeted exercises.

Recent Challenges

Several process-related challenges emerged across different year levels.

In Year 11, a student tackling advanced algebra needs to slow down and write out each equation, as skipping steps in quadratic proofs led to hidden errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student struggled with work layout—her method for factorizing was hard for others to follow, making it tough to trace calculation paths.

For a Year 7 learner, not keeping diagrams bold and clear meant key features were missed when drawing geometric figures.

In upper primary, times tables revision often focused only on easier sets, so gaps remained with the 6x and 7x tables.

Recent Achievements

One Watsonia tutor recently saw a Year 12 student finally grasp de Moivre's theorem, confidently using it to multiply and divide complex numbers—something that had caused hesitation before.

In another session, a Year 10 student who used to rely on the tutor for every step with Pythagoras' Theorem is now solving problems independently and even checking their own work for errors.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised their tutor by breaking down an irregular area question into parts without prompting, after previously struggling to start these on their own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Watsonia Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Watsonia Primary School.
