Tutors needs to deliver their fullest in educating the student. They need to have the patience to redirect from the main concept in focus to teach the fundamentals which the student lacks the knowledge. I explain as detailed as possible depending on the extent the student knows-if the student lacks the basics of the subject, I make a considerable…

That is important because it is building the bigger picture of each subject in the long term. I am flexible in my teaching method, and I am able to adjust to each student depending on what they…

I think that being able to build a rapport with the student is one of the fundamental skills to be a good tutor. This lays the foundation for the student being comfortable in asking questions to the tutor, as well as the tutor finding a teaching style that is most suited to the student. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure that the student has gained the ability to consolidate the information taught. In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

Inside West HindmarshTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava focused on calculating mean, median, and mode for data sets and practiced two-step word problems involving fractions and percentages.

For Year 8, Ethan worked through algebraic expansion and simplification of brackets, as well as solving equations by rearranging terms to isolate x.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Priya completed trigonometry homework using sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to find unknown side lengths in right-angled triangles, applying these skills to real-world worded problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student frequently left set homework incomplete, particularly on decimals and negative numbers, which limited progress when new concepts were introduced in lessons.

"He needed reminders to go back over past mistakes and work out why the answer is what it is," a tutor observed after repeated revision sessions.

In Year 11 mathematics, another student's working became difficult to follow—steps for breaking down complex 3D shapes or expanding brackets were often omitted or only partly shown. This meant errors (such as missing a squared term) weren't spotted until much later, causing frustration during test preparation.

Recent Achievements

One West Hindmarsh tutor noted a Year 11 student who, after initially hesitating to tackle worded algebra problems independently, now translates them into equations on her own and completes homework with only minimal help.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor observed that she has started verbalising each problem-solving step aloud—an encouraging shift from her earlier quiet guesswork—which led to her correctly calculating cylindrical surface area without prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once needed guidance for every operation is now breaking down multi-step questions by herself and choosing the correct operations without assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hindmarsh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
