I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to actively listen and to be organised with planning lessons. It’s really important to understand exactly what the student requires. This could be done through a pre-assessment at the start of the sessions. The tutor can then take that work home and arrange the next lesson…

The most important would be to be real with the student, really get to know them and understand how they think so that you can find ways to really help them. My strength as a tutor would be I have really good patience and I love breaking down things because that’s what my teacher did to help me especially when I didn’t…

Equip them with the tools they need to succeed. Most students do not achieve their full potential because they do not believe they have it in them. The most important thing a tutor can do is to help foster a love for learning and encourage a student to believe in themselves. If they believe in themselves, they can do anything. I am patient and…

Identifying the student's strengths and weaknesses is crucial. I would ensure their strengths are reflected through their work and that we are spending extra time focusing on the weaker areas. As a tutor, you act as the student's moral support, as the subjects they are receiving tutoring for are the subjects they find the most challenging. You are…

I think just making it a comfortable and enjoyable experience is the most important. If a student feels that they are enjoying it they are more likely to pay attention so they can get the most out of the time they have with me so they can go to school feeling confident in there ability. I think I’m an approachable and social person which is…

I think the most important factor of being a good tutor is not to simply facts that they have known, but to know how to express and explains that are so familiar to a tutor to a student who has never heard of it before. This is because a tutor/teacher is very different to a lecturer. A lot of teachers simply re-state the facts leaving a lot of…

Inside West Lakes ShoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Oliver practised decimal calculations and tackled advanced column multiplication for confidence with multi-step arithmetic.

For Year 9, Maddison reviewed key algebra skills and discussed areas of difficulty in fractions and division to build a foundation for upcoming lessons.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Tom focused on expanding algebraic expressions and began work on factorising quadratic expressions using worked examples for clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student had not completed her homework, explaining she'd lost the questions; this led to spending valuable lesson time redoing tasks instead of consolidating skills.

In a Year 11 session, the student forgot there was a quiz the next day and didn't use the provided exam cheat sheet for revision—"the homework was incomplete and seemed rushed," as noted by her tutor.

For a Year 4 spelling activity, difficulty fitting longer words into boxes resulted in over-erasing and hiding mistakes rather than addressing them directly.

These moments led to missed opportunities for feedback and confidence building before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One West Lakes Shore tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on trigonometry—she now talks through her steps out loud, catching errors herself and logically writing each stage of the problem, which wasn't happening before.

Another high schooler has started asking teachers for their tests back so she can review mistakes independently, a step up from waiting for help.

In primary, Esther recently moved up four levels in reading and finished a much longer book during tutoring; she also scored perfectly on her spelling test after struggling with certain vowel sounds at first.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like West Lakes Shore School.
