The goal of tutoring should be to empower students and thus the primary focus of tuition should be to develop confidence and independence rather than reliance. For this reason, I believe the most important component of tutoring is not working through content, but reflecting and future planning to ensure the student believes they have the skills…

Personally, I think it is important to boost students' confidence in their abilities by providing positive reinforcement and constructive feedback. Additionally, promote analytical thinking and problem-solving skills rather than just memorisation of facts. And finally, offer emotional support and encouragement, helping students manage stress and…

I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

Tutors needs to deliver their fullest in educating the student. They need to have the patience to redirect from the main concept in focus to teach the fundamentals which the student lacks the knowledge. I explain as detailed as possible depending on the extent the student knows-if the student lacks the basics of the subject, I make a considerable…

I think an essential thing a tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a student…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is to motivate and encourage them to do their best. A tutor will ideally be able to give a student confidence, knowledge, an understanding of why learning is important, and hopefully some sense of enjoyment of the learning process. Tutors should be able to understand that all students are on different academic levels and learn at different paces, with different styles, and hence empathise with where each individual student is at in the subject and provide empathy and support for them. To do this, tutors must build a safe and comfortable learning environment where the student…

I think the best tutor is one who guides the students properly and fairly not only in their academics but also about life challenges. Identifying the student's strengths and weaknesses is crucial. I would ensure their strengths are reflected through their work and that we are spending extra time focusing on the weaker areas. As a tutor, you act as the student's moral support, as the subjects they are receiving tutoring for are the subjects they find the most challenging. You are…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower the individual to believe they can do it. The most important thing a tutor can do is make sure they don't generalize their teaching across all students. Inside West RichmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ava worked on equivalent fractions and explored the relationship between multiplication and division through hands-on activities.

For Year 9, Ethan focused on trigonometry concepts and practiced solving linear equations, building confidence with step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Charlotte reviewed logarithms—applying log rules to solve equations—and tackled related problems without a calculator to strengthen her algebraic reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student's "messy/disorganized" books and sheets in Maths made it harder to keep track of assignment instructions, leading to confusion during multi-step problems—"fixing this may help her keep track of tasks," a tutor observed.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student appeared unmotivated and tired, which impacted his willingness to engage with new content from the start.

In Year 8, attempts at worded maths problems often stalled because the student struggled to identify what questions were actually asking for—sometimes skipping over terms or misreading instructions. In these moments, frustration crept in before any calculations even began.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in West Richmond noticed Tia now regularly catches her own mistakes when drawing gradients or solving equations—last session she paused before making an error and corrected it herself, which is a big shift from relying on hints.

Another secondary student, Zoe, went from struggling with statistics to independently tackling similar problems after just one walkthrough; she's also much more organised for exams than earlier in the term.

In primary years, Natalia has started spotting missed parts of questions and goes back to fix them without prompting—in today's session she even finished all her analogue clock problems unassisted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tenison Woods Catholic Primary School.
