I strive to understand my students as complete individuals taking into consideration their situations and backgrounds eg If a student has certain learning disabilities, I will prepare lessons utilising resources such as pictures, and videos that will engage them and help them understand the concepts well. A tutor has to be able to not only teach them content but able to support students on an emotional and cognitive level as they progress through a subject/s that they may not like or are uncomfortable with as they have had bad memories of the subject. As an english tutor, it's integral that we can offer a holistic, effective approach to tutoring in…

I believe the most important thing an english tutor can do is tailor their approach to each student’s unique needs, fostering the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This not only helps students gain confidence but also equips them with the tools to tackle educational challenges and take ownership of their learning. My…

Personally, an english tutor is someone outside of school who the student can rely on for their studies. Students show their vulnerability here so that tutor can build them to be strong at school. So a tutor can help the student be strong on their subjects and understand the subject with life. Understanding the student on what they need first and…

Being available for your students is the most significant thing any tutor can do. Just being available alone is not the thing, you must also be able to communicate with them in order to understand where they are facing difficulties while learning. Understand their problems and provide the best solution for them to catch things better. A single…

According to me, the most difficult part of life is being a student. Because there is a strict rule that students must pass all the subjects even when they are already mastered their favorite subject of study. But they lose their confidence and focus in their mastered subjects and they get lower grades. But the most important thing is that there…

There are many important things that can be listed but my top things would be building confidence and promoting independence and understanding. A tutor should create a safe, supportive space where mistakes are okay and effort is celebrated. I am highly patient and try to break concepts down into simpler terms and action steps. I’ll never get…

Build their confidence and show them that they can exprience success. So many students who struggle think something is wrong with them, however some students just need more time to learn and more practise with certain concepts. Showing many ways to work out answers and to learn is important too because no two students are the same. I am…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to be open to other methods and understanding that everyone is unique in the areas they struggle with and everyone's solutions to this are unique as well. Being patient with students allows them to work at a pace they feel comfortable with, this will allow them to find enjoyment…

1. Remaining patient with the student no matter what so as to encourage them to keep working on a problem rather than feel discouraged by a minor setback. This should be achieved by positive talk and reinforcing the importance of clarifying concepts to the student. 2. Praising new achievements of the student to ensure that they feel encouraged to…

The most important things an english tutor can do for the student is to really get to know the strengths and weaknesses of the student. In identifying the strengths you can use these to help improve the weaker areas of learning. My strengths are being a patient and well resourced tutor. Personalize child's learning and incorporate connections to the child's interest. Teach in the areas related to the child's strength and always minimise the child's weaknesses. Make learning real, relevant and make sure to see the positive student engagement taking place. Learning should be challenging enough so there is no frustration and the…

Flexible tutor that accommodated our Yr 12 student's tight schedule. She feels like her tutor listens to her questions, explains better than her teacher and are so grateful for the extra help.

Inside WongawilliTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Cailyn focused on two-step equations, practising changing the subject to isolate pronumerals and applying operations to both sides.

Year 10 student Daniel worked through questions involving VATs and straight-line value depreciation, as well as revising key financial mathematics definitions.

Meanwhile, Nicholas in Year 11 concentrated on trigonometry, especially solving for unknown sides using SOHCAHTOA with the unknown in the denominator, and reviewed related right-angle triangle problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student repeatedly guessed answers in maths rather than showing working or asking for help, especially during multiplication and division.

When unsure, she resisted reading questions aloud and became frustrated if prompted to explain her process—one tutor noted, "she wouldn't listen when I tried to clarify a concept."

In Year 10 algebra sessions, another student kept calculator work internal and rarely wrote out steps; as a result, sign errors went unnoticed until review.

For senior students tackling HSC topics like direct variation or trigonometry, incomplete memorisation of key formulas led to slow progress and confusion under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Wongawilli noticed one Year 11 student who previously avoided asking questions now actively requests more challenging HSC algebra problems and works through them with increasing independence.

In another high school session, a Year 9 student who struggled to recall formulae for area has started bringing her own notes and uses them to substitute values confidently during lessons.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once hesitated to tackle subtraction now feels accomplished after mastering the method, willingly choosing tougher problems without prompting—she finished last week's set by solving three new worded questions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dapto District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dapto Public School.
