The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to be open to other methods and understanding that everyone is unique in the areas they struggle with and everyone's solutions to this are unique as well. Being patient with students allows them to work at a pace they feel comfortable with, this will allow them to find enjoyment…

Build their confidence and show them that they can exprience success. So many students who struggle think something is wrong with them, however some students just need more time to learn and more practise with certain concepts. Showing many ways to work out answers and to learn is important too because no two students are the same. I am…

A tutor has to be able to not only teach them content but able to support students on an emotional and cognitive level as they progress through a subject/s that they may not like or are uncomfortable with as they have had bad memories of the subject. As an english tutor, it's integral that we can offer a holistic, effective approach to tutoring in…

Personally, an english tutor is someone outside of school who the student can rely on for their studies. Students show their vulnerability here so that tutor can build them to be strong at school. So a tutor can help the student be strong on their subjects and understand the subject with life. Understanding the student on what they need first and…

Being available for your students is the most significant thing any tutor can do. Just being available alone is not the thing, you must also be able to communicate with them in order to understand where they are facing difficulties while learning. Understand their problems and provide the best solution for them to catch things better. A single…

Provide a calm and supportive environment where learning is a partnership and where a strong relationship between tutor and learner is established. Having positive learning experiences are key to a child's success, along with making the learning fun and engaging. I have had 29 years experience as a classroom teacher. During this time I have…

I think close support and motivation especially during their examinations is crucial. Making the student sharp by regular homework/assignments and making them fall in love with the subject and eventually learning are very important in my opinion. Identifying students strengths/passion and grooming them is another very imperative factor. I think…

As mentioned above, it is extremely important for tutors to enjoy the content they are teaching. These attitudes are projected onto the willingness of students to engage with the subject. In addition to this, it is important for tutors to create and maintain relationships with their students that emulate trust and belief in their abilities. A…

I believe the most important thing an english tutor can do is tailor their approach to each student’s unique needs, fostering the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This not only helps students gain confidence but also equips them with the tools to tackle educational challenges and take ownership of their learning. My…

The best thing an english tutor can do for a student is listen to their needs, because it is evident in a classroom when a teacher doesn't know how to teach by the way they address the problem. Different people need the same issue explained in various ways, and so it is extremely important to have a great depth of understanding in order to…

According to me, the most difficult part of life is being a student. Because there is a strict rule that students must pass all the subjects even when they are already mastered their favorite subject of study. But they lose their confidence and focus in their mastered subjects and they get lower grades. But the most important thing is that there…

I think that it's important for tutors to be patient and understanding. Just because a child doesn't get good test scores, it doesn't mean that they're incompetent. From my experience, kids can actually excell in subjects once they have the material explained to them in a way that they can understand. Ever since I was young, I have always excelled…

There are many important things that can be listed but my top things would be building confidence and promoting independence and understanding. Make their students feel comfortable (e.g; polite conversation), this thus allows the student to voice their concerns and allows the tutor to adjust what they are teaching and how they are doing so. Don’t rush the process and ensure the student is confident in areas of concern before brushing into another concept. I just recently graduated…

Inside KoonawarraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Daniel worked on linear equations with negative numbers and fractions, interpreting points on a Cartesian plane, and practiced finding perimeters and converting square units.

For Year 9, Cailyn focused on dividing and subtracting fractions before moving to algebraic substitutions involving like terms and decimal numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Nicholas tackled trigonometry with unknown sides in denominators using SOHCAHTOA, alongside discussing film techniques for English analysis.

Recent Challenges

Several students across Years 3–12 showed process challenges impacting progress.

In Year 8 algebra, one student had trouble recalling the algebra covered during the last session, with homework left incomplete, which led to repeated explanations of dividing fractions and reciprocals.

A Year 10 student working on trigonometry struggled to set out her working clearly; inconsistent formatting meant errors went unnoticed, especially with negative signs.

For HSC English, another found it difficult to plan arguments holistically—his topic sentences often mismatched examples given, requiring on-the-spot restructuring.

When calculator input was needed in Year 9 maths, entering values out of order flipped expected answers and created confusion mid-solution.

Recent Achievements

One Koonawarra tutor recently noticed a big shift in Daniel's approach to maths—where he once hesitated, he now redoes questions on tax instalments until he's sure of his process, showing genuine self-motivation.

In Year 12 English, Nicholas has moved beyond just listing character traits; he's begun structuring essays by carefully selecting which characters to focus on and organising his thoughts in a way that matches his own thinking style.

Meanwhile, Ariana in primary school used to stumble over her times tables but now uses multiplication tricks from flashcards independently and even started division without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dapto District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Koonawarra Public School.
