The most important thing as a tutor is acknowledging their strength and weaknesses and using them to improve their academic skills. Also allowing the students to know that it's ok to make mistakes, that's why tutors are here to help. Easy to communicate and open to any type of conversations. I can break things down into primary school language to…

I think that a tutor shouldn't just rote teach a student problems so that they can pass exams, this leads to little useful learning on the students part. I think a tutor's most important job is to teach the student problem-solving strategies/learning methods as well as thoroughly work through the in's and out's of the content; alongside problems…

The upmost important thing a tutor can be is a mentor. Striving to be a positive role model in any students life is key. By teaching through knowledge and past experiences it can benefit more ways than just academic. Being a student can sometimes be difficult and everyone experiences it differently. Whether being an upcoming test or being…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them the material in a way that makes sense to that student. There are multiple different types of learners and it is vital for a tutor to explore other methods of teaching the subject matter, so the student may have the best chance at understanding and retaining the subject matter. I…

The most important thing a tutor must do for a student is to equip them with the tools and confidence they need to effectively apply auto-didactic learning strategies in a critical manner. This can be accomplished by encouraging independent studies and 'thinking out loud' so that students can understand general approaches to solving problems and…

Build their confidence in their own abilities, and take the time to understand their needs as a learner and inspire them to enjoy learning rather than see it as a chore. Having my students be excited to come to tutoring, and seeing them light up telling me about the marks they’ve achieved and their improvement, is what drives me. Thus, the most…

A tutor must be able to develop and understand a student. A student will need to understand the concept themselves and it is our job to assist them to understand any issues that arise in their development. To put it simply, tutors are guides and the student is the captain. Therefore we must be able to resonate with each student and treat each one…

I believe that different students have different learning styles and study techniques that work for them, and it is important that this is catered to in the students…

Helping them through problems, and actually encouraging and motivating them along without just revealing the answers will help develop their problem solving skills, making the next problems easier to overcome. Most tutors forget that students never enjoy tutoring, so it is important to set interesting challenges to keep students motivated and also polishing their skills using unorthodox methods. Tutors can provide a one-on-one situation where they're able to realise the students weaknesses and target those areas. They can also be someone else for the students to ask questions where they may be too shy or unable to during a large classroom environment. Tutoring can also help reinforce content that students learnt that day or week. I am a…

Inside WooloowareTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Thomas worked on geometry concepts including angle identities (co-interior, alternate, corresponding) and types of triangles using labelled diagrams.

For Year 8, Mia practiced solving equations involving inequalities and algebraic manipulation.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Alex focused on financial mathematics applications and reviewed exam topics such as probability, building confidence through real-world examples and past paper questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Ancient History, one student missed key source details by collecting references after writing instead of during research—"gathering sources as she goes would save time and boost accuracy."

Meanwhile, a Year 9 maths session revealed messy handwriting made it hard for anyone else to follow working, especially in algebra; this led to confusion when checking answers.

For a Year 4 lesson on measurement conversions, the process was skipped and calculations weren't written out step by step, so errors went unnoticed until the end. These habits created extra work retracing steps or redoing tasks rather than moving forward confidently.

Recent Achievements

One Woolooware tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after struggling with algebraic manipulation, now solves single-variable equations independently and even recognises patterns in algebra without prompting.

In Year 8, another student who used to hesitate when tackling geometry problems has begun using different methods to find unknown angles and can combine multiple topics to solve complex questions—something she found daunting before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who was previously reluctant to ask for help now openly checks her understanding of decimals and confidently converts between hours, minutes, and seconds on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cronulla Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Francis de Sales Catholic Primary School.
