A tutor must be patient with their student. It is vital to understand that the student may not understand the concept in only one class, but they can continue to learn it slowly over multiple classes to slowly build confidence. Because of this, the tutor must have patience in the student's abilities and recognise that they mustn't make the student…

Depending on the level of struggle, I think validating the student and making sure they feel like it's not the end of the world if they don't understand a concept the first time it's introduced to them is 100% ok. Some students need to spend a little more time working on those things and there's nothing wrong with that because that extended effort…

I believe the most important things an english tutor can do for a student to do encourage them and help them learn to believe in their ability and themselves. Most importantly a tutor can help set realistic goals and when the student achieves them they can be proud of themself. Also tutoring can help teach students new studying technique for them…

To be patient, understanding and always willing to go back to the basics and refresh their memory and to get the work to fit together. But mostly the tutor must be someone who the student is comfortable with and able to ask any questions or queries however small or silly they may think they might be. Strengths: Excelent communication and people…

I believe learning is fun and rewarding. I think if an english tutor can help a student understand the value of learning new things, and encourage and support them to be able to learn on their own, they have succeeded. I think I'm calm and patient, and my strong communication skills as well as my ability to tailor my language for different needs…

Helping people understand why learning is important to them. Kids can find it hard to see why what they're learning is important. I think a fundamental key is showing how the process of learning itself is the important aspect, rather than specifically the content. While the content is important to grasp, the process of regular work towards a goal,…

Inside YeringTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Baylee practiced converting between mixed and improper fractions, as well as using diagrams to solve division problems.

In Year 8, Riley worked on making y the subject in algebraic equations and explored composite functions through targeted exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Cameron focused on analysing persuasive techniques in opinion articles and developed structured introductions for comparative language analysis tasks.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 English, one student hesitated to write ideas freely, "worrying too much about how it should be phrased," which led to slow drafting and missed opportunities for deeper analysis—especially when planning exam essays.

For a Year 6 maths session, another student often confused which sides to use for area calculations (e.g., multiplying the wrong dimensions) and struggled with estimation tasks, slowing progress in geometry.

In both cases, reluctance to risk mistakes or difficulty recalling key processes meant more time spent revisiting basics than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Yering noticed Cameron, a Year 11 student, is now annotating texts more independently—he's begun highlighting key quotes and linking them to themes without needing prompts, which marks a shift from his earlier reliance on guidance.

Baylee, in Year 7, has started actively requesting more challenging decimal problems during sessions and made only one error when writing numbers as words—a big change from her frequent hesitations last term.

Meanwhile, Elsie (Year 4) moved from struggling with vertical addition and subtraction to confidently adding two- and three-digit numbers together by the end of her lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarra Glen Reading Room—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yering Primary School.
