Being able to give a full and comprehensive understanding of a syllabus, AND to make the student confident. Because the more understanding and confident they are, the easier will it be for them to analyse and solve the problem, they might even become creative with the problems, which is essentially a phase of nirvana for students. I am helpful…

Showing a student how his courses relate to real life situations and make him appreciate them. Giving the student a passion for learning and for knowledge. Teaching a student the value of knowledge which teachers at school often don’t have enough time to do. I know how to help a student connect dots between different concepts and subjects to…

The most important things a tutor can do is to bring the best out of a student. Aside from assisting the problems students might have in schools, it is equally important for a tutor to act as a role model through showing great examples. On top of that, a tutor should also be empathetic in order to know the student's strengths and weaknesses so…

In my opinion, tutors have the responsability to ensure that the students have learned and correctly understood a topic. I always liked the metaphor building a car. A mechanic can tell you how to build it piece by piece but you can not replicate that process unless you have really understood it. In addition, tutors have an important role in…

If a tutor can inspire and transform his student to be better and the student realizes the positive change in him/her and acknowledges it, then the student is on the right track and doesn't need the tutor anymore. When I see that a student is struggling in academics, I try to get to the root of the problem. My study sessions involve counselling…

Just be someone in their life that can offer them support. As a tutor, I think helping students reach their academic goals is a given, but how one would go about doing that would also reflect on the students. Thus, tutors can also help students develop positive and important qualities that would prepare them for the life beyond school. I would say that I am patient and organised, which are good qualities…

According to me tutors should work on their patients and listening skills. A good tutor will be able to figure out why the student is having a hard time with a subject and address that issue exactly. The tutor must be a good listener because a lot of the time, the student will tell you exactly why they are having trouble. Sometimes, finding out…

I believe that the most important thing for a tutor is to be patient with a student. People have different speeds at which they learn and it is imperative that we as the tutor adjust our expectations for them. Tutoring is more like a dialogue between two people rather than a question and answering session. I want my tutee to go home feeling that…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is build a good relationship so the student feels confident and secure. While education is paramount, a student who feels unsafe or stressed is more likely to perform poorly and absorb less information, so I believe that being someone the student is comfortable around in turn leads to…

The most important thing would be to create a safe space for students, so they will feel welcomed and understood. This can build their confidence as well. I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

Local Reviews

Rosie is tutoring my child in year 7 maths and has built up a great rapport with her. Through my observations I can see that Rosie has a strong understanding of maths and is able to explain ideas and concepts very easily. She has a lot of patience and always checks my daughters understanding and offers alternative explanations where needed. Rosie is always punctual, friendly and polite and I am very happy with the progress that has been made to date.

Inside ZetlandTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student William worked on correcting homework covering simple interest and surds, along with catching up missed class content.

For Year 9, revision with Ben focused on dividing and multiplying fractions as well as tackling negative and fractional indices in surds.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Xavier practised converting remainders into decimals, solved word problems, and labelled different types of triangles using diagrams to support understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left several steps unwritten when tackling algebraic equations, as one tutor noted: "he tried to do everything in his head instead of writing it down." This led to confusion over signs and made errors harder to spot.

In Year 11, incomplete homework meant that basic perfect square practice was missed, so extra time had to be spent revisiting foundational rules rather than progressing.

Meanwhile, a primary student working on division often forgot her materials at home, causing delays while searching for worksheets and slowing the start of each session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Zetland noted that William, a Year 10 student, has started attempting every maths question instead of skipping the tough ones—a real shift from earlier sessions when he'd often give up if stuck.

In Year 11, after struggling with surd problems last term, he was able to recall the steps and solve similar questions independently this week, using his own notes for support.

Meanwhile, Elliott (Year 5) used to stay quiet during lessons but now openly talks through his reasoning on each English question and even asks for extra examples when something feels tricky. Last session, he wrote down all his ideas without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Green Square Public School.
