A tutor must be able to teach a student *how* to understand, so that they are properly equipped when approached by new hurdles in their learning. With my experience in peer support programs, I have developed patience and the ability to guide students towards a solution without blatantly handing it to…

From my previous experience teaching a lot of students. The most vital point the student wants from their mentor is compassion and sympathy to connect with them. Once I can connect with them, I can understand at what level they are currently in and use the best method to help them strive to the best possible level they can achieve for the given…

The most important things a tutor can do are to understand the student’s individual needs, build their confidence, and create a supportive learning environment. A tutor should explain concepts clearly, be patient, and encourage students to ask questions without feeling judged. It’s also important to motivate students and help them develop…

As a student myself, the important things a tutor can do for a student can provide a clear and simple explanation and help them how to break down a given problem and apply the learned concept in real-life scenarios. And, another important point to note is that every student is unique, so as a tutor, I should be able to adapt to the teaching style…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is teach a student how to be conscientious in their work, how to learn effectively and efficiently, and problem solve for themselves. These traits are important life skills that can be gained through education/schooling that they will inevitably have to apply in their maturation into…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student to lift them up what they feel mostly interested while learning anything. To motivate them while they do something new and bring any new idea to resolve any problem. That will help to develop the psychology of a student in more positive way to move forward with their willingness of thinking…

I believe that the three most important things that a tutor can do for a student, perhaps the only important things which a teacher should do, are to make students curious about what they are learning and appreciate the beauty of what they are learning by developing a way of thinking of their own. I understand and appreciate the beauty and depth…

Helping my students to gain a capacity to solve more questions by themself is the most important thing. I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

Inside Airport WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ava revised solving linear equations involving brackets and multiple x terms, and practiced rearranging equations into y = mx + c for graphing.

In Year 10, Daniel focused on statistics by identifying mean, median, mode, outliers and constructing boxplots using a CAS calculator with real data sets.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Annabelle worked on multiplication tables and applied spelling strategies during reading aloud to strengthen both numeracy and literacy skills.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, one student struggled with choosing the correct reference frame for projectile motion and occasionally copied calculator answers incorrectly, particularly decimals—"needs to practice being more careful when transcribing answers from the calculator to the paper."

In Year 10 Maths, skipping written steps in algebra meant sign errors went unnoticed until much later.

For a Year 7 student, homework was left incomplete after an illness; this break disrupted his recall of area and perimeter rules during revision.

In primary years, over-reliance on calculators or "rushing" through reading led to misread words or missed grammar cues, leaving comprehension gaps mid-story.

Recent Achievements

One Airport West tutor noticed that a Year 11 student who used to skip steps when simplifying surds is now carefully writing out each stage, which helps him avoid confusion and stay organised through multi-step problems.

In Year 10, another student who often hesitated to check calculator work has started using her intuition to spot errors and will now double-check large calculations independently instead of waiting for guidance.

Meanwhile, in primary school, Annabelle began applying fractions from her lesson to everyday life—before the session ended, she was already describing her lunch in fractions and explaining her thinking unprompted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Essendon Keilor College-Niddrie Campus.
