I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make learning fun or easy. A student studies because he/she is enjoying it or forced because of responsibility or other circumstances. If you can convince the student that they are enjoying what they are learning and it's actually easy, then they will gain a lot of self-confidence…

A good tutor will be patient as well as a good listener. Addressing the students' queries, errors with honesty yet with empathy. A good tutor should be willing to be dynamic in their teaching style, so as to engage the learners. Additionally, a tutor should be willing to share their own experiences and draw parallels with their students. I…

The best tutors and educators remember the importance of being lifelong learners. I feel a tutor can help the student by personalizing the learning according to the needs of the student by incorporating connections to the students' interests. A tutor must teach to the student's strengths and minimize the student's weaknesses. Tutors should…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be able to teach a student how to think for themselves, and this may not only apply in the subject but in life overall. Teaching the student to look at problems from a different perspective and learn as they go is very important. In doing so, the student can receive better academic grades and get into a…

Being a tutor I consider being patience with my students is the key to understanding the subject. I also believe that a tutor should be flexible. This means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the student. Also sharing my own personal experience and lessons learned goes a long way toward building trust…

In order for the tutoring sessions to be efficient, it is essential that a good relationship be established between the tutor and the student. Often, this relationship is created quickly, but at other times, it may take a few sessions before the student opens up. The success of this relationship reveals the personalities of each of them, but it…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to impact positively on the life of the student and bring about a change. Other than helping a student reach their academic potential, a tutor can help him or her develop other skills such as critical thinking, time management and effective study skills other than rote…

Priority is to solve their problems. HOWEVER, the most important thing is to intrigue them with knowledge. I know people can be intimidated by math, so did I; but all they need is someone to help them realize the magic math brings to life. Besides academic stuff, I am good with people. I'm totally the opposite of boring. I smile a lot. I've…

A tutor provides personalised attention to a child which helps children learn at their own individual pace. Learning at one's own individual pace helps people connect with the subject with much more depth and explore the application of the theory that is being imparted to him. I feel a personalised pace of learning is the most important thing that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Never give up on students. In that way, students' academic performance can be improved and their confidence can be built up. Then, a solid foundation can be laid for further study and more career paths is available in the future. 1. I do understand the concepts…

In my opinion, guiding the student to being able to help himself or herself is the most crucial aspect in teaching. In other words, teaching the student to learn things on their own is what makes teaching so powerful. Firstly I am patient with students to a certain degree. A tutor must recognise the level of understanding of a student and then explain concepts to that level. This will ensure progress of the student. 1) I have patience to keep explaining till the student understands it. 2) I teach each student differently based on their level of understanding. 3) I prepare myself well before the session, try to…

Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
