In my experience tutoring students, as well as being a student myself, I believe a person needs to do four main things in order to be a good tutor; they need to be able to assess what their students are lacking, know what you can do to improve on their skills, communicate well, and boost the overall confidence of the student and the confidence…

Make learning enjoyable. the last thing I want as a tutor is a student dreading doing their work. If I can push them to find satisfaction and fun out of learning then I feel I have succeeded. I believe I have an alternative perspective on most topics and can therefore explain concepts to students who may not grasp it through their teachers…

A tutor must be able to gain the trust of the students to allow them to feel comfortable enough for the learning to commence. An intimidating environment is an ineffective one for teaching. I focus my attention mainly to the weak areas and skills that the student require improvement in. By doing so, I successfully tutor the student to overcome any…

When you're a tutor, students are like children to us. Nothing is more valuable than our children. Everything we do, every good aspect we think of still feel less for our children. That's how I see myself as a tutor As a tutor I feel I can connect with the students more deeply as I have been studying human psychology for a long period of time and…

Listen to them, let them teach you about themselves, let them have a go and try things and trial and error. No matter how many times they get it wrong they will always learn more by putting the effort in rather than just being given the answer. Also find out what techniques help them learn best, some students can pick up things in different ways…

A tutor should be able to assess and listen exactly to students' hardships in the subject. From there, build on ways to simplify the issue. With mathematics, I think what is most important is to simplify the way of solving problems as much as possible. Another important feature that a tutor can do is to build a friendly relationship with students…

Be considerate, patient, understanding, and non-judgemental. It can be very hard to accept help in the first place, and being made to feel like you're failing or a burden is only going to make that harder. I work to understand how their mind works so I can explain in a way they will best understand. I am also very patient, particularly with those…

Tutors should not be someone that a student can rely on to complete homework or assessments for them. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to help them help themselves through assistance and guidance, teaching them the know how of becoming an independent learner so that the student is able to achieve at their own pace. Build their confidence and show them that they can exprience success. There are many important things that can be listed but my top things would be building confidence and promoting independence and understanding. A tutor, fundamentally, serves a purpose to give the student additional knowledge or hone their pre existing knowledge. To achieve this, not only academic aptitude is highly pivotal, a strong and individual-catered means of transferring said intelligence is vital. This is one of the factors which differ classroom teachers from tutors as they are…

Stuart and Ben seem to have hit it off straight away and my son was very happy with his first lesson. It is still early days to really make a comment but Stuart seems like a very smart, helpful, pleasant young man and they both seem to share an interest in soccer.
Janet, Albion Park

Inside Albion Park RailTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Cooper focused on multiplication and division strategies, along with practicing worded problems involving ratios.

For Year 9, Laaibah worked through network concepts by identifying paths, trails, circuits, and applying shortest path algorithms using real exam-style questions.

In Year 12, Adeel revised financial mathematics topics such as simple and compound interest calculations and practiced HSC past paper questions on shares and annuities to build confidence for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Mathematics, a student often avoided showing full working for multi-mark problems; as one tutor noted, "she answered but left out key steps, which made checking errors harder." This led to confusion during revision when trying to retrace her logic.

In Year 8, another student regularly relied on calculator use before setting up equations in worded problems—this sometimes resulted in misapplied operations and incorrect answers.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to attempt unfamiliar multiplication without number charts, slowing progress on timed drills.

During stressful exam moments, one Year 9 student rushed inputting numbers into calculators and missed key details from questions, leading to preventable mistakes despite knowing the content.

Recent Achievements

In Year 11 maths, Laaibah, who used to hesitate with complex financial formulas, now solves compound interest and depreciation problems on her own and has started building her own study plans before tests.

Joel (Year 10) previously relied heavily on hints for graphing but can now plot scatterplots independently and determine relationships independently.

Meanwhile, Ariana in Year 3 struggled to recall multiplication facts, but after practicing new tricks and using flashcards, she quickly answers times tables without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oak Flats Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albion Park Rail Public School.
