I think continuous support is the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student. Without having continuous support, the student cannot rely on their tutor to help them when they are having difficulty. I think my strengths are that I am patient, I've had great exposure to younger students. I also have an open mind which allows me to help…

Secondly time managment, delivery method, discussion between students and parents, questionnaires to understand their views and observation, proper strategies and course plans are the other important things that every tutor should understand. Thirdly,…

Be prepared to listen to the students problems and adjust your teaching method such that they are able to learn the way that is more effective for them. I believe I have all the material ready to be a tutor that is prepared for the students such that no time is wasted in the tutoring session to read over old material. I also believe that I can…

In my view, the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to instill confidence. I firmly believe that there are no "bad" students, only "bad" teachers who fail to understand their needs and provide appropriate support. As a tutor, I prioritize creating a supportive environment where students feel safe to ask questions, make…

Make content fun and understandable for you. My number one thing I disliked about school was how confusing some topics were presented, I believe that I can provide a fresh perspective on a lot of topics and subjects that most courses could not. I'm a very patient and understanding person who can fit a lot of subjects into different contexts for…

Other than endeavor to increase the student's performance and confidence in the subject. I believe a tutor must be able to generate interest in the subject so that the student is motivated to study and their performance consistently improves and is sustained. The most important part of tutoring in my opinion is being able to adapt to different students requirements, and noticing what each student needs most from you. Some students need someone to slowly work through problems and teach them the process, while others need someone to help enforce good habits and routines rather than purely just teaching,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have patience and to create a safe learning space for the student. I do not believe that inflicting pressure on a student is the best way for them to learn as it may create resent towards studying. I believe that I can identify others learning strengths, such as visual learning,…

- A tutor must encourage and motivate a student to continue learning and trying. - A tutor should be able to answer 80% of questions that are presented by a student. If there is something that cannot be solved during the session, the tutor has the responsibility to follow it up and research the topic that the student is having a difficulty with,…

Michelle Williams, Alexander Heights

Inside Alexander HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Chloe worked on calculating mean, median, mode, and range for different data sets and practiced representing this information using tables.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on solving linear equations and understanding isotopes and half-life in science, including some worksheet activities.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia reviewed simple interest calculations alongside forming and solving linear equations, with extra attention given to real-world worded questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was encouraged to write down thoughts when tackling algebra, but often relied on mental calculations—leading to missed steps in rearranging equations and errors like "misreading values and question."

In a Year 7 lesson, incomplete notes on angles meant confusion persisted between co-interior and alternate angle types.

One senior student practiced only familiar times tables during revision; as noted, this avoided weaker areas and limited growth in harder multiplication tasks.

In Year 8, reluctance to show working ("does not want to/ does not understand the step by step approach") slowed progress solving fractions.

Recent Achievements

One Alexander Heights tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get stuck on equations now working out both x and y values independently and even identifying whether the gradient was negative or positive—a real leap from last term's hesitation.

In a recent high school session, another student who rarely spoke up began talking through her maths thinking aloud and showed more interest in tackling new problems, rather than waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a primary-aged learner completed all her school holiday homework on probability without reminders and could clearly explain her answers when asked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ballajura Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alinjarra Primary School.
