The most important thing a tutor can do is empower the student to become an independent learner. It’s not just about providing the right answers, but rather teaching them the underlying frameworks and problem-solving strategies they need to succeed. Fostering their self-belief so they can confidently tackle future challenges on their own is the…

A tutor needs to provide strong mentorship and create a system of trust. If the student doesn't trust the tutor, no learning is able to happen. I do this by listening to my student and hear what they are saying, and listen for what is not being said. I am kind and compassionate. I listen to students and learn about what they need. I learn exactly…

Setting Higher Expectations Push students to achieve higher standards and they will eventually score good grades and along the way, offer lots of praise. Some may take more time than others, but all students want to be told, "You're smart and you're doing a good job." I think that my biggest strength is my flexibility and willingness to always…

The essential qualities that should define a good tutor include being clear and offering patient instruction to help create an encouraging atmosphere for the learner. It is important that a good tutor guides the learner through complex material and inspires him/her to seek further clarification without fear of ridicule or embarrassment.…

I consider encouragement, feedback and trust to be an important part of tutoring. The teacher should support the learner to become more confident in their own academic capabilities, giving them timely and accurate feedback. Also, it is just as important to build positive relationships with your students so they can come to you with their problems…

Haven't looked back, ezy maths has really propelled my child as far as her grades at school. Our maths Tutor has been fantastic. My child felt comfortable with him from the beginning and has been broadening and strengthening her knowledge ever since. With regular feedback from Tutor you feel you are always in the loop in relation to child's development.

Inside AltonaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Madison focused on similar triangles and practiced trigonometry and Pythagoras' Theorem with exam-style questions, while also exploring compound interest as part of a class validation task.

In Year 10, Liam worked on consolidating his skills in applying Pythagoras to worded problems and using trigonometric ratios to find unknown side lengths in triangles.

Meanwhile, another Year 10 student, Ella, covered bearings in trigonometry and revisited measurement concepts including volume and surface area calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student, when solving worded trigonometry problems, tended to avoid writing out steps and key words, making it harder to spot where misunderstandings occurred. This meant errors often went unnoticed until review time.

In Year 8 algebra, over-reliance on the calculator for identifying gradients in linear functions led to confusion about core concepts; as one tutor put it, "he could find the answer but struggled to explain how he got there."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student often forgot to bring completed homework, leaving gaps in practice that slowed progress with times tables and division tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Altona noticed that a Year 9 student, after initially hesitating to ask for help, began actively seeking clarification on trigonometric ratios and then independently solved for unknown side lengths using SIN, COS, and TAN.

Another high school student who used to skip steps with linear graphs is now confidently plotting points and explaining the meaning of rise over run without prompting—she even developed her own summary sheet for an upcoming SAC.

In primary, one student who would guess times tables has started working them out aloud step by step, moving from 10Ă—3 backwards and discovering new patterns on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Altona Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
