Pass on experience and knowledge, so that the students can understand the topic at a conceptual level. A student that understands the core concepts behind a topic will be best prepared to take their study to a higher level so that is the most important thing a tutor can teach. I think I'm friendly and approachable as a tutor. I believe this is of…

Firstly, improve the students grasp and understanding of the content, providing them with not just the ability to answer questions, but to understand logically why something is such. Secondly, help develop an appreciation for the area of study by delivering the tutoring in a positive and engaging matter so that the student enjoys learning it.…

I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. Hence encouragement is key and positive re-enforcement. I also believe that making the student comfortable around you and going through source material in an efficient manner can make…

A tutor’s most important responsibilities are to make learning clear, personalised, and encouraging. Understanding a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style is essential. By genuinely engaging with the student, a tutor can create an environment where learning feels comfortable and motivating - which is why I prefer one-on-one…

The most important thing for a tutor is to never underestimate a student, and to be there for them as a support and to show them that they can. If a student loses self esteem and think that they can't do it...they wont. It's all about giving them a healthy mindset which allows them to gain the knowledge given. My biggest strength i believe is how…

A tutor has his student's career in hand. If a tutor wants, he can change the future of a child by showing him the right direction. A tutor can positively affect the attitude of a student towards his life by motivating him at early stages of life in school. I am highly motivated to help students build up their future career and i only want one…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire confidence in the student. It's not just about teaching concepts, but helping the student believe in their own ability to understand and apply them. A good tutor should adapt their methods to suit each students learning style, making lessons clear, engaging, and enjoyable. It's also…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the one-on-one attention that is not given to them in schools with large class sizes. The student needs to be able to feel comfortable enough to ask questions (even the embarrassing ones) and they need to know that the tutor will sit with them for as long as it takes to…

A good tutor, besides academic understanding, communication, patience and flexibility are the key aspects. Every student has their own unique learning curve and techniques, it is the tutor's job to discuss with the student and figure out the best way to convey the ideas and give appropriate study load. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all,…

The most important thing I can do as a tutor is meet every student where they are. I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students become independent learners. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make sure the student clearly understands the topic, not just memorises it. It's about helping them build real confidence so that when they answer questions, whether in class or in exams, they're not second-guessing themselves. That means breaking things down in a way that actually makes sense…

Inside AshburtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Emily focused on solving trigonometric equations and interpreting tan graphs, before starting introductory work on combinations and permutations.

Year 10 student Sam worked through financial maths problems including compound interest, then explored the use of transition matrices to model real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Phoebe revised statistics by calculating mean, median, and mode for grouped data in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student often needed extra prompts to start unfamiliar rate and trig graphing questions; "if it was not obvious how to make the triangle, additional prompting was needed." This hesitation slowed progress and meant fewer questions were completed during sessions.

In Year 8 English, one student did not follow their writing plan or think sentences through before starting, which made paragraphs feel disjointed.

For a younger student, forgetting rules for spelling—such as 'ou' versus 'ow'—persisted even after recent revision.

A VCE learner's uncharged laptop limited access to digital notes and disrupted exam preparation in the moment.

Recent Achievements

One Ashburton tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to apply financial maths formulas, started introducing new shortcuts and solving problems more independently.

In another session, a Year 9 student who previously needed lots of prompting was able to tackle simultaneous equations solo once she'd worked through an example together.

Meanwhile, one younger student made clear progress by writing longer sentences and handling harder subtraction questions with minimal help—she now separates her ideas into paragraphs without reminders.

Last week, a high schooler finished every question on their trig worksheet correctly, including those involving horizontal translations.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashburton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Michael's School.
