The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure they feel supported and allow them to take the lead. Students need to have the ability to decide what to study in tutoring classes and be able to study with the tutor after sessions independently. I can create a comfortable and supportive environment for students as I am patient…

The most important thing a tutor can provide to his/her students is knowledge. And should treat each student equally, and have a mentality to help whenever a student needs it. As a tutor first of all I try to understand each and every students sitting before me. This way it helps me to guide each one of them to the right path. Iam very friendly…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is offering unconditional support while teaching kids. Children need a secure, calm, and nurturing environment to help them grow, so I believe offering these traits to kids while tutoring them is so important. To be a successful tutor, they have to possess qualities in which assists…

As a tutor, what I believe to be important for a student is the ability to not only push but to better the student in their schooling career. My years of high school were spent with teachers who picked favourites and let me fade into the background. As a tutor, I would enjoy seeing the potential in someone and letting them see that for themselves.…

A tutor has to be mature which will help them to develop a special bond with all their students. It is highly important to be empathetic. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspire and motivate. While these seem like simple elements, in successfully doing so, the tutor has essentially altered the learning experiences for the student from that moment onwards. The student is then able to develop their confidence in their subjects, push to achieve their goals,…

I think the most important thing is helping build their confidence, not just their knowledge. A tutor should make sure the student actually understands the content, not just memorises it, and create a space where they feel comfortable asking questions. It’s also important to adapt to how each student learns, because not everyone understands…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. I believe that themost important thing a tutor can do for a student is to pass on tips and tricks from their schooling experience rather than just hand out textbook knowledge - anyone can do that. Little tips and tricks as well as talks about future plans are going to help students more in the long run as well as teach them niche studying habits…

Inside AshgroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 Maddie worked on measuring and drawing angles, including applying the Z and F rules for similar angles, and practiced finding missing angles in diagrams.

In Year 10, Daniel focused on quadratic equations by exploring factorising over the real numbers and using the discriminant to determine solution types.

For Year 12, Sarah tackled integration problems with emphasis on integrating exponential functions and applying the chain rule, while also revising differentiation techniques involving logarithmic scales.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to keep written work neat and clearly labeled during algebra tasks, making it harder to spot calculation errors—Bookwork also needs attention. Labelling questions, and setting out could be neater.

In Year 7, incomplete homework was noted; assigned worksheets on fractions and times tables weren't attempted between lessons, so concepts needed reteaching each week.

For a senior student in Maths Methods, over-reliance on calculator entry led to repeated decimal errors: Frequently missing a zero in small decimals.

A Year 12 Chemistry student delayed error analysis write-up, stalling progress on data interpretation until this step was completed.

Recent Achievements

One Ashgrove tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, who used to hesitate with logarithms and complex problem-solving, was able to complete all the challenging questions correctly and efficiently by the end of their session—something they'd previously found overwhelming.

Another high school student, after missing an entire topic on Earth geometry and time zones, managed to catch up within a single lesson and confidently solved related problems without extra prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger student has started showing more independence by remembering steps for converting fractions and decimals without being reminded, finishing all assigned problems accurately before the session ended.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Finbarr's School.
