I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. When students grow up, it is not the quadratic equations or math problems that helps them to thrive in higher education and life, but it is the ability to…

In my view the most important contribution of a tutor is helping her student do well academically as well as in personal and professional life. It is not just about the concepts but also their practical implications and applications. In my view I have always been a good teacher to my students. Lucky enough to make a difference in their lives. My…

It is being able to relate to students who struggle and find a way that works for them, not necessarily a way that only works for me. In my experience, a student needs a tutor willing to adapt to their needs. A tutor can always keep track of their student's progress and help them achieve their goals. We are helping students achieve their goals.…

I think as a tutor, it is most important to have patience especially when teaching young bright minds. It is also important to make sure that your students are comfortable so that they can benefit from your teaching. As a tutor and having taught students at various levels, I think my strength as a tutor is to understand the needs of each…

Adapting to change is one of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student. There are always changes in the moments of student's learning such as being in a different classroom environment and also having to work with a variety of different students with unique goals for their studies. Further, confidence and patience are also…

I think the most important thing as a tutor is really understanding the student — meeting them where they are, being patient, and explaining things in a way that makes sense for them. It’s not just about knowing the material, it’s about making them feel comfortable enough to ask questions and confident enough to keep trying. I think my best…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

Inside Aspendale GardensTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jack focused on multiplying and dividing fractions as well as adding mixed fractions with different denominators, using step-by-step worked examples.

For Year 10, Maya revised factorising general trinomials—including perfect squares and difference of squares—while also learning to solve quadratics using the discriminant.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex worked through physics questions on electromagnetism and electricity, applying concepts to practice problems in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, a student often tried to complete all steps mentally, leading to errors in balancing equations; as the tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In VCE Physics, a Year 12 struggled to recall electromagnetism formulas unless directly prompted and didn't maintain a list for revision—this slowed problem-solving during practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner with strong verbal ideas found it challenging to translate thoughts into written work during story writing tasks.

A recurring theme across several grades was incomplete mastery of times tables, which led to calculation slips in both primary and senior maths.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Aspendale Gardens recently saw a Year 11 student, who previously hesitated with polynomial long division, quickly learn to apply the method and explain why it's useful—all within one session.

In a Year 9 session, a student who often guessed through factorisation questions started asking clarifying questions instead and managed to solve quadratic trinomials independently for the first time.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to rush through reading aloud now pauses at harder words and self-corrects before moving on, showing new care and accuracy when tackling unfamiliar vocabulary.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aspendale Gardens Primary School.
