The most important thing a tutor can do is be a fantastic role model for their students, inspiring them not just academically but also in life. They can help students develop important skills like time management and perseverance through their own experiences. Tutors are great resources for advice on both schoolwork and personal challenges. I think it is a tutor's job to make the subject fun for the kid and make them love the subject, not develop a hate for it. I used to hate chemistry back in highschool and found it very hard until I found a tutor who made me understand it and I eventually started to love the subject. I ended up getting an A* in the subject. I would want to follow…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to create a comfortable space around them where the student can not only consider their tutor as their guide but also a friend, without any fear of anything. I believe being polite with students, giving them tasks that they can do while having fun at the same time, are some of my…

To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. While preparing a topic I prepare as if the students know everything (which helps…

A tutor should be able to provide lessons to a student which are tailored to their abilities and learning style. This is something which students can't always get in their regular classes and a tutor could provide through being attentive. They should also be able to make students feel confident in their abilities and iron out any weaknesses. My…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

A tutor most importantly needs to understand the areas that the students need improvement. Considering their ability to grasp new concepts and learning styles, a tutor will have to design their teaching methods to suit a particular student. Lastly, a tutor should always encourage their students which will help them gain the confidence to try new…

As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

Inside AuchenflowerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Anna worked through fractions and number properties, using visual models to compare values.

Year 8 student Lucas focused on algebraic expressions and practiced solving simultaneous equations step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Chloe revised trigonometry and bearings, including calculating unknown sides in right-angled triangles and applying angle rules to navigation scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often completed questions quickly but didn't reread them, leading to misinterpretations—he needs to read questions carefully and slowly to prevent easy errors.

In Year 11, another student hesitated to write out working for matrix multiplication, sometimes relying on memory instead of process, which made it hard to trace mistakes.

A Year 10 student struggled with motivation, only continuing tasks after reminders; their focus waned after each question was finished.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's written work became difficult to follow in multi-step division problems, making it tricky for anyone else (or themselves) to check their reasoning later.

Recent Achievements

One Auchenflower tutor noted a Year 9 student who previously rushed through algebra now takes time to show each step, even voluntarily writing out their working when solving equations.

In a recent high school science session, a Year 11 student who once hesitated to interpret motion graphs is now reading and explaining them with less prompting—choosing appropriate axes labels without help.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who would avoid asking questions about fractions has started voicing uncertainties aloud before tackling new problems. Last week, she finished all her fraction addition tasks independently for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Toowong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Toowong State School.
