i believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to always be there for them and to understand both strengths and weaknesses of their individual learning, using this to adapt teaching and encourage motivation/hard work. i myself had access to highly skilled tutors which i believe i can imitate/make my own. i know the content and…

A tutor plays a pretty significant role in a student's life. As a tutor, I can try my best to impart as much knowledge as I can to my students. I can provide them with the best of my capabilities right from being punctual, right on time and not only completing the course but also offering a good number of revisions. My strengths as a tutor are as…

1) Improve their academic performance. 2) Share my own studying experience with them to let them have a clear picture of their future study. 3) Share something more than just mathematics, but some other multi-culture things. 1) I'm very confident with my math as an international student from China. I was well trained in this field because of the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

I believe going the extra mile to ensure that a student has the proper understanding is primordial. In the past, I have dealt with tough students with patience and empathy, clearing my students’ doubts and making them gain an in – depth understanding of the subject. I prefer to portray myself more a friend than a tutor and reassure my students…

I think so rather than just teaching them if a tutor can actually make hard concepts easier for other students by using their experience and actually make learning fun then it would be really helpful for a student. As I am a post grad student I have recently gone through my tutorials and I know as a post grad student where do students face…

In my opinion, the relationship beyond subject tutoring is the most important aspect of a tutor. A great tutor must have the ability to connect deeply with the students to give them personalised teaching methods and materials, which ultimately increase both efficiency and effectiveness in teaching. In order of doing so, a tutor must have a great…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping the student believe in themselves and letting them know they can do well. This is because most of the time students self doubts leads to them struggling with content not a lack of ability. I create strategies to help my students remember content easier and I make sure that I…

A tutor should be able to provide clarity in moments of doubt and confusion. Encourage practice and definitely believe in the student. Studying should be made interesting and not one sided as it can turn out to be really fun. I am extremely patient and organized. I think the most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a positive learning environment. Mostly, I think it's important to be consistent in class attendance to make max use out of the limited time period. I also think that always believing in the student makes a huge difference, especially in maths. They need to know that someone sees their capability apart from them. Adding patience to this and allowing them a safe space to make…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. Nothing is stronger than a photographic memory, explaining things and concepts in a flow diagram or figure form will help students to retain more information. Local Reviews

It was easy to get started on Maths tutoring for my son. I registered interest online and received a phone call soon afterwards. I advised my requirements and received a text from our new tutor within a few days. We have had one session so far. I was impressed by how knowledgeable the tutor was, and how relevant she made the session to my sons needs.
Elisabeth, Balwyn North

Inside Balwyn NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie practised simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting fractions using number lines for visual support.

In Year 8, Olivia explored concepts of percentages as well as GST and discounts, applying these to real-world scenarios.

For a Year 11 student, Daniel worked through integration by substitution and recognition methods, focusing on how to approach related SAC questions with extended mathematical reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to attempt harder algebra problems, tending to focus on familiar questions; as the tutor noted, "she circled back to easy equations instead of tackling the more challenging ones." This meant less progress with complex substitution and balancing tasks.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student often skipped writing out full working when applying ratios or unpacking redox titration questions—errors in calculation crept in unnoticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 Maths student leaned heavily on their calculator for trigonometric simplifications but missed opportunities to strengthen mental fluency; this slowed problem-solving under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Balwyn North tutor recently saw a Year 9 student who used to hesitate when solving equations now confidently add and subtract terms on both sides to isolate x, tackling problems without prompting.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student who previously struggled with trig identities managed to simplify fractions using trigonometric rules and successfully differentiate inverse trig functions for the first time.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had been guessing at shapes began accurately naming polygons with more than four sides and even transformed numerical digits into English up to 999 without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bede's School.
