I think it's a question of what a tutor can BE rather than do. I found in my experience that I always responded to teachers who were enthusiastic and portrayed a genuine care for the learning of the student. In a metaphorical sense, the tutor must think like a student in an empathetic way rather than merely be a one way stream of instruction. If a…

I think above all else, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them and give them the necessary skills and understanding to be able to work independently, and to better understand the studying strategy that suits them best. It is important that a tutor is able to teach a student but more important than this is that a…

There are 3 things a tutor must do in order to be successful and respected: listen, care and try (all three of these are my strongest points). My ability to connect with the student, empathise with their weak points and endeavour to provide them with specific questions and techniques will be a great asset for the EzyMath team. My strengths are…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence in their own ability. It's not just about getting the right answer, but helping them understand how to approach problems and trust their thinking. When students feel supported and capable, they’re much more willing to engage and improve. I think one of my main…

To believe in them and their potential, to get the best out of them, giving them support and resources to achieve realistic goals for themselves. I also strongly believe in not placing too much pressure on them but to stretch them comfortably within their limits to improve and achieve results. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their confidence and skills to be able to problem solve independently. That requires building a students skills to not only understand the techniques which can be used but also how to most effectively apply them. This is particularly important as it enables students to become…

Understanding the issues of a student. I believe that tutors should be able to understand why a student is struggling with something, and help them according to their strengths and weaknesses. A student won't be able to learn with advice that isn't applicable to them, because everyone's capability to learn isn't at the same level. Gaining a…

Facilitate the student's own learning by equipping them with the tools to then seek out how to learn and solve problems, and allowing the student to go where they want to go. I think I have great emotional ability as a tutor, able to connect with the way students are feeling and their attitudes and approaches to work. I think approach and attitude…

A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a student if…

As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

As a tutor cannot take exams or do homework for the student, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to have faith in the student's ability and assist the student in every way possible to ensure that the student has faith in their own ability to achieve their goals. Patience, passion and empathy. Patience as it takes time to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be able to track how they are going and excelling or developing in while they are being tutored. Either having a log or an online log for them to track to see how they are going and checking in with them at the beginning of each session to see how they are developing so they know what to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is believe in the student. This along with teaching them the value of hard work is significant as it pushes a student to access their potential knowing that they are supported. The value of hard work is also an imperative that should be conveyed through the tutors lessons regardless of the content taught. I…

Helping students improve or maintain their grades, along with teaching extremely valuable lessons is the most important thing I can do for a student. Tutoring can be challenging, especially when it comes to motivating your learner. You see the potential they have, and they often hear about the potential they have, but they do not feel as though they got what it takes. Living in such a busy and demanding time can often make us feel the time constraints on everything we do and we expect our…

Using a tailored learning program for all abilities and expectations, and an unfailing growth mindset, a tutor should provide students with a love of learning that leads to internal fulfillment and a virtuous cycle where concepts are pursued willingly, and thus, more thoroughly. However, a tutor is not only a teacher, but a mentor; they should…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. At the end of the day we only see them once or twice a week. We can't teach them everything. So it is important that we guide them on how to learn and study in order to be successful. Myt strength lies…

Inside BanksiaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sasha practised measurement skills by working through questions from Chapter 8 and also received support on specific homework problems.

In Year 10, James revised simultaneous equations using the elimination method and focused on understanding coefficients through step-by-step examples.

For Year 12, Charlotte completed practice questions on networks, rates, and ratios directly aligned with the Standard Mathematics syllabus to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tackling networks found it difficult to memorise key definitions and formulas, which slowed progress; as the tutor noted, "explaining the parts of the topic he didn't understand was hard without repeating myself."

In Year 7 algebra, another student consistently avoided writing out working for equations, making sign errors harder to catch.

For a primary creative writing task, one child hesitated to try new ideas out of fear of mistakes—leading to less original responses.

Meanwhile, in senior trigonometry revision, incomplete homework limited the depth of discussion and practice on advanced problems.

Recent Achievements

One Banksia tutor noticed a Year 11 student who, after struggling with ratios in the past, began identifying calculation errors independently and even caught a mistake before the tutor did during a complex networks problem.

In another high school session, a student who used to skip showing working for algebra now writes out each step and talks through her process aloud without prompting, making it much easier to catch mistakes early.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student recently started asking for extra worksheets on mixed numerals—something she previously avoided—and now tries new fraction problems by herself before seeking help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arncliffe Public School.
