The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. With students, a tutor should not only be considered a teacher but also a friend who they can inquire about topics and issues which a tutor has already experienced and can be an assistance of. My strengths are a…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. Beyond just solving problems or improving grades, my goal is to help students truly believe in their own abilities. Many students struggle not because they lack potential, but because they doubt themselves. I work to change that. By…

Definitely to be patient and to never assume knowledge as known or simple. Further to focus on not just content, but also mark schemes for maximum success. I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. I have found it extremely valuable to ensure students develop a solid work ethic and understand how they can study effectively. In this sense tutoring plays a supplementary role, ensuring…

It is important to be patient and approachable so that students feel comfortable coming to you with their queries. Availability and dependability is also important. If a student has last minute issues the night before their exam it is important that they can rely on their tutor to get back to them by the end of the day with an answer. I am patient…

I believe the most significant aspect of a tutor is integrity and maintaining a level of respect to my students. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is adapt to suit their needs. Whilst many tutors can simply pass on content, a strong tutor is capable of teaching content in a way that suits the learning needs of a student. This may include using different communication methods, teaching at different paces and understanding the students…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. I think the most important thing as a tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. There could by many reasons why students come to tutoring: they're struggling to keep up, they want to excel or simply their parents want them to go. No matter the reason, what I think is most important for a tutor to do is to try and make the students actually interested in the content in front of them and then aid them as they grapple with it.…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is teach with a growth mindset and empower students. A tutor should help students build confidence in their own abilities and encourage them to believe that they can succeed, even when the material is challenging. It is also important to foster a deeper understanding beyond memorising theory by…

Inside BanksmeadowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ghazal focused on working with fractions, decimals, and percentages, as well as refining her history journal writing by gathering information and crafting concise responses.

In Year 10, Sam tackled trigonometric identities and practised applying these to solve a range of problems.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack worked through advanced differentiation techniques including the chain rule, product rule, and quotient rule using exam-style questions for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student struggled with time management during problem sets—"she took a while to remember the formula," leading to incomplete answers under exam conditions.

For a Year 11 extension maths student, over-reliance on notes was evident when working through calculus application questions; missing formula recall slowed progress and led to hesitation with unfamiliar content.

In English (Year 10), another student depended heavily on online resources for grammar and punctuation rather than self-correcting, which made written responses less coherent.

In each case, moments of uncertainty or avoidance left gaps in understanding that showed up most sharply in timed tasks or independent writing.

Recent Achievements

One Banksmeadow tutor noted that Lucy, a Year 12 student, now approaches challenging calculus and trigonometry questions independently—last month she would leave difficult problems unfinished, but this week she worked through trial paper questions on her own, correcting previous mistakes.

In a recent high school session, Ruby shifted from hesitating on algebraic inequalities to solving extension questions confidently and even asked for extra practice problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, Bas in Year 4 has started using pen-and-paper strategies for multiplication and division before reaching for the calculator—a big step up from his earlier guesswork—and finished all assigned word problems accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mascot Library (incl. the George Hanna Memorial Museum)—or at your child's school (with permission), like Banksmeadow Public School.
