The most important things a tutor can do for a student is first and foremost to be patient and never give a student the feeling that he/she won’t be able to do a certain tasks or in general become better at a certain subject. Moreover you should be really flexible in the way you teach things, because everybody learns and understand things…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show the student that through perseverance they can be good at the subject, and to appreciate the subject's content for what it is. Another important feature is instilling confidence in the student as that is a skill that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. I am currently…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are creating a supportive learning environment, adapting to their learning style, and building their confidence. Encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving helps students become independent learners rather than just memorizing answers. Most importantly, making learning engaging and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is understand their needs. Adjusting learning plans or explanation methods can greatly aid a student’s learning, and it’s important to recognise each individual has different learning styles. Additionally, by understanding a student’s needs, a tutor is able to target lessons to work on…

I think the most important thing is being a tutor who is able to understand the limits and goals of their student and to help them achieve it whilst not applying excessive pressure on the student. A tutor needs to ensure they can engage with their students to an optimal level. A tutor needs to ensure students want to come back to them and learn from them all while ensuring they are actually learning something. Tutors should also know when they need to be tough on students and have to let the students know they are doing wrong otherwise the…

For me, the most important thing that a tutor can do is to develop students' confidence and ability in their studies. By working with a student personally by meeting them where they are at in their abilities, a student's academic confidence can grow as they are able to focus on areas of their work that they specifically struggle with. I think this…

Learn with the student. I am striving to be a better person each day, with it, comes humility. I believe that if you come to the student appearing human and able to make mistakes (as I am not a robot), the student will understand that I am not intimidating nor a machine, but rather human just like they are. Building a strong and humane connection…

I'd say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is making them feel more confident in their ability to learn a lot of the time. Because they may feel as though a topic is beyond them but once broken down in ways that they already understand it benefits them wholly not just as a student but as a person in general. My strengths as a…

Over the years, I have developed the opinion that the teaching of transferable skills - contrary to only what is needed at the moment - is most valuable for the student’s future development. It is important to see that just completing the mandatory homework will not suffice, the real challenge is to change the mindset. As a good tutor, one has…

Inside BanksmeadowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ghazal focused on working with fractions, decimals, and percentages, as well as refining her history journal writing by gathering information and crafting concise responses.

In Year 10, Sam tackled trigonometric identities and practised applying these to solve a range of problems.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack worked through advanced differentiation techniques including the chain rule, product rule, and quotient rule using exam-style questions for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student struggled with time management during problem sets—"she took a while to remember the formula," leading to incomplete answers under exam conditions.

For a Year 11 extension maths student, over-reliance on notes was evident when working through calculus application questions; missing formula recall slowed progress and led to hesitation with unfamiliar content.

In English (Year 10), another student depended heavily on online resources for grammar and punctuation rather than self-correcting, which made written responses less coherent.

In each case, moments of uncertainty or avoidance left gaps in understanding that showed up most sharply in timed tasks or independent writing.

Recent Achievements

One Banksmeadow tutor noted that Lucy, a Year 12 student, now approaches challenging calculus and trigonometry questions independently—last month she would leave difficult problems unfinished, but this week she worked through trial paper questions on her own, correcting previous mistakes.

In a recent high school session, Ruby shifted from hesitating on algebraic inequalities to solving extension questions confidently and even asked for extra practice problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, Bas in Year 4 has started using pen-and-paper strategies for multiplication and division before reaching for the calculator—a big step up from his earlier guesswork—and finished all assigned word problems accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mascot Library (incl. the George Hanna Memorial Museum)—or at your child's school (with permission), like Banksmeadow Public School.
