I consider effective communication to be the most important thing a tutor can have for a student, as this one quality filters into all aspects of the job as a tutor. This allows the tutor to gain an understanding of the specific goals or concerns of the student to then maximise the use of sessions, allowing for substantial growth. I believe my…

I believe a tutor's role is to help students truly understand what they're learning, build their confidence, and develop skills they can use beyond the classroom. I'm patient and adaptable, and I take the time to explain concepts in different ways until they really make sense to the student. I try to create an encouraging space where they feel…

True learning happens when students build the tools to think for themselves. In my experience, the most vital role of a tutor is fostering self-efficacy through precise diagnostics and a supportive environment. Rather than just assisting with immediate coursework, I look past surface errors to pinpoint root learning gaps and adapt materials to how…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is not only teach the content but make it relevant and fun. No one likes to slog through dry content. I have always been good with children and young adults. I have a knack of breaking down complex concepts into more bit sized pieces so they are more approachable for the students. I begin…

This was given to me by my teachers and parents, and I think this is the best gift a teacher of any kind can give to a student. I have a solid…

To reveal the simple nature of (what may seem) complex. Once a student understands that they have the ability to unravel something they thought was out of their reach, their confidence and newfound ability create a framework for smart study skills and eagerness to learn in the future. Those two qualities are necessary for the independent learning…

Provide a safe space for the student to make mistakes without judgement. They don’t always have this at school with their peers looking on. Provide high level materials that don’t just duplicate those from school or in generic books. Teach obviously! but i think if the tutor can make the lessons as fun as possible so that the student looks forward to them as something enjoyable rather than as purely work, the best results will occur. One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is not only make the subject fun and easier to understand but to make the student believe in himself/herself. Motivation and confidence are two key elements of student success, if I can support them in achieving a sense of self-efficacy regarding these elements, they are bound to see improvement. Students often know where they fall short in their work, they just need motivation to improve those areas. Once they know that they can achieve this themselves,…

I think a good tutor needs to first and foremost be able to understand the level of their student in order to help them improve. I also think that being able to re-explain mathematical theories and concepts in alternative ways is essential in helping students to fully comprehend the subject. I feel patience is key, but a good tutor also needs to…

Inside BarangarooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Ava focused on advanced trigonometry by reviewing her recent test and then moved on to polynomials, tackling chapter exercises and logs.

Year 10 student Tom worked through several lessons on quadratics and linear relations, with sessions dedicated to solving worded problems using algebraic methods.

For a Year 3 primary student, time was spent practising addition and subtraction strategies as well as developing reading comprehension skills through short passages.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student repeatedly avoided writing full working for rearranging equations—"she said, 'I just get stuck at the start,' and would hesitate to begin unless prompted."

In a senior English assignment, another left their TEEL structure incomplete and was reluctant to link arguments back to topic sentences, resulting in an unfinished draft.

A Year 11 student struggled with domain and range because revision focused only on familiar problems rather than tackling new question types; this left them underprepared for tests requiring flexible thinking.

After setbacks, confidence dropped sharply and questions went unasked, making progress slower than expected.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Barangaroo recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitation, started tackling circle geometry questions on her own and now attempts problems independently before asking for help.

In a Year 12 session, Martina made real progress—she stopped relying on example solutions and now remembers formulas well enough to solve algebraic fraction questions without prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously stumbled over reading tasks managed to read an entire short paragraph aloud and explain its meaning without assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fort Street Public School.
