As a student who has had tutors in years 5 and 6, I consider a friendly tone, a great listener, and a knowledgeable person the key characteristics of a tutor that could help a student in their needs with a particular subject. A tutor should always be prepared with the additional resources that they could provide to their student who struggles with…

The most important things a tutor can do for students are to build their confidence, make learning understandable, and create a safe space to ask questions without fear. A good tutor listens, encourages progress, and help students become independent learner. It is not just about giving answers but about teaching them how to find answers. My…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand him/her. By understanding the student, the teacher can learn how to approach and support the student based on their needs and requirements. I am a great communicator who can creatively explain and express ideas in ways that students can learn quickly and easily. I also have a…

Noah is doing well so far with Michelle as his tutor. He is starting to improve with his understanding of Maths and is happy with the way Michelle is working with him. I think as time goes by and he becomes more confident that he will improve more.

Inside BeaconsfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Stella focused on solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing measurement questions involving parabolas.

For Year 10, Maddie worked through integer operations in Chapter 1A and practised applying rules for adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Alex completed a diagnostic assessment covering decimals, integers (both positive and negative), fractions, BODMAS (order of operations), and basic area and volume calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors—this made it tough to spot where logic went off track and slowed correction.

A Year 11 student leaned heavily on mental calculations for polynomial division but left little written working; this caused confusion when revisiting the problem or checking for mistakes.

In Year 6, messy long division layout led to redoing several lines after mixing up remainders.

Another senior student avoided reviewing feedback on a completed application problem, so similar setup errors kept recurring during practice. Frustration set in as solutions seemed just out of reach.

Recent Achievements

One Beaconsfield tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rely on a "shortcut" for simultaneous equations now confidently uses both elimination and substitution methods, even checking answers independently instead of waiting for guidance.

In Year 8 maths, a student who once hesitated with fraction calculations now solves multiplication and division of fractions accurately and even simplifies before working out answers—a big shift from earlier confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student recently started trying questions without giving up at the first hurdle; last week he finished an entire set of perimeter problems after initially struggling to understand the questions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bunjil Place Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Haileybury College - Berwick Boys.
