I believe that an important thing to consider is empathy and encouragement, as students often look up to their tutors for advice, validation and knowledge. Another significant thing a tutor can do for a student is provide them with plenty of practice questions and worksheets, especially for mathematics, practice questions allow certain concepts to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to look after their health and well-being and to set them on the right path, sharing them our personal experiences so that they would learn something from it and be a positive influence to them. My strengths as an tutor is the ability to connect with the student and the ability to associate…

I think the most important thing is giving students learning and study strategies which they can apply across different subjects and learning areas. I believe this is the most useful information you can teach a student as this knowledge is what will allow them to become an independent learner, improve their academic marks across the board, and…

Personalize learning and teach the student specific to their learning style. Its best to ensure they learn the info required in the way the student is capable of learning, rather than enforcing them to follow a default method. Definitely communication and experience with younger people, if they struggle to understand a topic I could explain in…

In my opinion, there are three main factors to consider: 1) Solve all the doubts that the student has. 2) Encourage students to continue exploring in depth the topic that is learned. so he can better understand what he is studying only if he can constantly practice. 3) Encourage students to ask, to do research, to challenge themselves in…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give the student confidence. I think it is important to create an environment where students feel comfortable having a go at everything, and eventually reaching a point where they can attempt questions on their own. I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

I believe that patience is very important when it comes to tutoring. This is important because it allows for the student to remain comfortable and ask questions without being worried that they are being judged. Since asking questions is a key aspect of the learning process, impatience would simply limit the students ability to learn. I am able to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be someone there to listen to them, someone there to guide them through their academic problems (not just the academics but the mindset as well) and someone who they feel is having a positive impact on their learning experience. To boost confidence and motivation. I believe that you cannot force a student to learn, but you can guide them to do their best. If the student does not wish to learn, there is not much I can do to improve their grades. But, if the students are highly motivated and willing to learn, even if their grades are below average, they can rapidly improve…

Inside BeckenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack practised addition and subtraction of hundreds, as well as solving basic word problems involving carrying numbers.

Year 9 student Sarah focused on factorisation and graphing quadratics, including finding the roots and sketching graphs by hand.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lucas worked through algebraic expansion and factorisation using different methods, with extra attention given to tackling challenging test-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, calculator input errors and missed negative signs ("Needs to ensure the input in the calculator is correct") led to avoidable mistakes on algebra questions—one tutor noted, "she lost marks when a negative sign was overlooked."

For a Year 11 English student, over-reliance on copying text instead of paraphrasing limited essay clarity and structure.

In Year 4, messy handwriting and writing outside given spaces made it difficult for teachers to follow working.

A Year 6 student sometimes avoided sounding out unfamiliar words, skipping them during reading tasks. This left gaps in understanding and confidence mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Beckenham recently noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to express original ideas now starting to write answers in their own words, moving away from simply copying the text.

In a high school maths session, another student who often struggled with logical problem-solving managed to structure their answers clearly after just some guided hints.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to need frequent reminders about spelling has begun spelling out words independently when shown once and can now name various places without any prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cannington Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gibbs Street Primary School.
