The most important thing a tutor can do for a student I consider is to motivate them to learn. I believe that learning really starts when the student is motivated. I think my strengths as a tutor are being organized, compassionate, professional, patient, enthusiastic, a good communicator, a good listener, and…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence and adapt lessons to their learning style. For example, I often use practical examples such as real-life applications of forces and motion (e.g. seat belts in car) in Physics to help students better understand difficult concepts rather than relying only on…

It would be empathy, in my opinion. I am aware that there are intelligent people who are easily able to surpass me in knowledge, but I believe that to effectively teach and learn, one must have a sufficient level of empathy. One need not always be a great teacher to be a great intellect. My capacity for empathy is unmatched. I can put myself in…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them completely understand the material. Not only so that they can do a specific question, the important thing is for them to understand the concept, so when they encountered different kind of question, they would know how to approach it. Furthermore, a tutor must adjust…

Listen to what the student actually wants help with and find out the root cause of why they are stuck or confused. The teacher needs to work together with the student, not against them. I am training to become a teacher and so I have a good understanding of how learning can occur, especially for students. I have been able to help students in the…

Each student learns in a unique way and at a different pace and thus a good tutor must understand this and personalise their learning. Alongside this, the tutor must focus on building the student's confidence and teaching to their strengths before wandering into waters unfamiliar to the student. I believe that teaching to the student's needs and…

The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

I understand that teachers don't always have time to help students one-on-one and that tutors can help bridge the gap. I believe that learning is an exponential process, so a small victory in a tutoring session can lead to enormous benefits in the student's future. Having someone to rely on. The tutor and student connection is more personal that that of a teacher. This allows them to become closer and ensure that the student will concentrate more. I believe that the two most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to help them gain a passion for their studies, and to teach them to apply their study skills to all of their subjects. I think that these two factors can really help students succeed with school and allow them to reach their full potential elsewhere in life. One of…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

If the student is able to explain the topic to others, I believe that is a good indication of their understanding and shows that a tutor has successfully explained a topic or cleared doubts. Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students become independent learners. That means not just giving them the answers, but helping them understand how to solve problems on their own. A tutor should also create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and are encouraged to keep learning. I think…

Inside Bentleigh EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Poppy practised division strategies and reviewed perimeter concepts using her school homework as a base.

In Year 8, Max focused on simplifying algebraic fractions and solving simultaneous equations, including work with partial fractions for deeper understanding.

Ava, in Year 10, revised key skills in fractions and percentages to prepare for an upcoming test, concentrating on converting between the two forms and applying them to worded problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student began to lose track of his books and submitted late homework, especially as division and times tables were set for practice; as one tutor noted, "he's starting to forget to organise his books neatly and orderly."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on VCE Maths struggled with clarity in written working—steps were rushed or left off when using the CAS calculator, which led to confusion in vector questions.

In a Year 5 session, a lack of confidence meant Ava hesitated to start fraction addition unless prompted, slowing her progress during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Bentleigh East tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip homework now completes every task and even asks for harder practice questions, showing real initiative.

In Year 8 maths, a student who previously hesitated with decimals has started working through decimal problems independently and timed himself on practice sets to push his speed.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who would quietly guess at answers before, now talks through her problem-solving steps out loud—especially when tackling tricky multiplication—and finished all her worded questions quickly without any help this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Valkstone Primary School.
