The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Listening to them and understanding their point of view when something seems difficult for them, even when it isn't really from my perspective. Then combatting this problem by exploring different ways to present a difficult concept. I do this using analogies and using simple…

Understanding and patience, some students lack knowledge of basic concepts and require a boost, so it's important to tailor tutoring styles to each student, whether that is written examples or oral analogies, especially in the Maths and Sciences. I can simplify things to the most basic form, which is what I needed help with when I was in high…

Being patient and understanding. At the beginning of my tutoring journey, I provided several private one on one tutoring sessions. Never push them and…

Personalize learning and teach the student specific to their learning style. Its best to ensure they learn the info required in the way the student is capable of learning, rather than enforcing them to follow a default method. Definitely communication and experience with younger people, if they struggle to understand a topic I could explain in…

I believe explaining a concept in such a way that the student understands it intuitively and can thus use that understanding to solve different problems, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts, is an incredibly important part of being a tutor. The tutor should be adding to a student's toolkit such that they can solve a variety of…

I think the most important thing is to adhere to the students needs and their form of learning. If a student is more of a visual learner then I would adapt my teaching style to suit them. I also feel that being available after class hours for queries and concerns is vital but also be able to provide guidance and a good role model not only…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

Being able to provide support. Sometimes, a student just needs someone to talk to- and knowing that they've been through the same thing that they have, it empowers them and encourages them to make proactive decisions in their learning. A tutor's primary aim is to instill confidence in the student. Students seek tutors for a variety of reasons. Maybe the student is struggling and needs someone to explain things more clearly. A wise and patient tutor will do that, and the student will feel more confident; that they can do it! Some students come to tutoring with no real problems,…

For me, the two things that aided me most when I was being tutored in highschool were practice questions given to me by tutors and when these tutors took their time to really deconstruct these concepts until I fully understood them. Ideally, although admittedly ironic, you want a student to be able to stand on their own two feet and achieve their goals without the need of a tutor at some point. So, although the direct role of a tutor is to teach content, the wider, arguably more profound role of a tutor is to teach lifelong skills, habits, and techniques that students can…

Inside BentleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ali worked on finding gradients of lines using both the rise over run method and co-ordinates, as well as solving linear inequalities and exploring parallel and perpendicular gradients.

For Year 10, Sara focused on chemical equations by practising ionic formulas, hydrated compounds, and empirical formula calculations, reinforcing her understanding through worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Nia tackled decimals and fractions in geometry questions, using diagrams to help compare values and solve problems involving shapes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on chemical equations had not completed the assigned homework, leading to repeated minor errors in writing formulas—"the student still shows some minor mistakes in writing chemical formulas," noted one tutor.

In Year 8 maths, another student's written work on rearranging equations was messy and lacked clear labelling, making it harder to spot calculation errors before moving on.

A Year 4 learner avoided practicing weekly spelling words, so the same mistakes resurfaced during class dictation.

One Year 7 student faced ongoing challenges converting word problems into diagrams, losing focus mid-task and requiring multiple reminders to return attention to problem-solving.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bentley noticed one Year 11 student who used to hesitate with balancing ionic equations now talks through each step aloud and manages most problems independently.

Another high schooler, previously unsure about forming linear equations, has started solving for 'c' and graphing inequalities without prompting—she even asked for extra questions last session.

In a Year 4 session, a student who would get distracted during math tasks stayed focused throughout and answered all mental calculation questions quickly, showing much more patience than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cannington Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Santa Clara School.
