A tutor can make the complicated things easier. Also, can make a proper timetable and show a way how to study strategically without getting bored or stressed I can easily amalgamate with my student as a friend and I think that's my most powerful side as a tutor. This is because they don't hesitate to tell me their problems and that's how I get to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to celebrate even the smallest of wins. No matter how slow or hard progress is, it is still progress! Of course it is important to push students, but it is equally important to build their self confidence. One of my strengths is my patience. Thanks to my past experience as a Teacher's…

A tutor's primary objective is to ensure that the student truly understands the content, and while doing so, the tutor must present the material in an interesting and engaging manner. If done correctly, this may ignite a passion in the student for the subject. I have a deep understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics, which will allow me to…

Help students to help themselves by scaffolding their learning and building their confidence. Teaching students to approach a topic in a way that they can break it down into its constituent parts, developing a plan to address each task, and successfully completing it, step by step. I think the most important is to follow the students lead. They will often know their weaknesses and from spending time working with them, you can take note of possible areas of improvement. However, at the end of the day you are there to help the student so by listening and communicating effectively both parties will be satisfied. The ability to…

Some of the most important things a student can gain from having a tutor would be to build up their confidence in a certain subject, by providing specialised teaching and education for that specific student, to increase their understanding. A tutor would also provide a different perspective of difficult concepts, being seperated from the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to create a safe and supportive learning environment. This allows open, two-way communication where students feel comfortable asking questions without fear of judgment. Such an atmosphere encourages curiosity and deeper understanding of the subject. Ultimately, it ensures the most optimal…

As stated above, changing the student's attitude towards the subject and simplifying the information are the two major key factors in tutoring. These are in addition to changing the student's approach towards learning in general. My strength as a tutor is by initially breaking the fear and possibly dislike the student has for the subject or…

I believe it is most important to build a student's confidence. Once they believe they can achieve things on their own, and develop an interest in the subject, higher grades will follow. To be an effective tutor, it is essential to focus on three critical aspects. Firstly, a tutor should be able to create a personalized learning experience that caters to the unique needs and learning style of each student. Secondly, building a strong rapport with the student is essential in fostering a positive and supportive learning environment,…

I believe that helping the student truely understand the unit or content they are struggling with is important. However, I also believe that self achievement is important. Not all students are going to get A's, but if I can help them achieve their personal goals, then I consider it a job well done. Making the student feel accomplished and clever,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them strategies to gain independence academically. I view tutoring as training wheels, which should come off when a student is able to consistently score well even without the tutor's help. I believe I am able to connect with students on a one to one level, breaking down…

To ensure the student feels that they can ask any question (relatable preferably) and not feel that is a "silly question". I also think it is important to ensure the tutor has a plan/ is organised so that the student too knows that is the plan/ aims and goals that are being set. I am compassionate when teaching, I like to make the student feel…

Good grades would be the obvious answer. However, if I can spark an interest in the subject for the student the grades will logically follow. Inside BictonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Xavier focused on adding and subtracting larger numbers, practising three-digit addition and takeaways to build confidence with bigger values.

In Year 7, Alice revised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as tackling measurement conversions such as millimetres to kilometres using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Max worked through algebraic equations involving variables alongside adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions that include variables.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student struggled to set out addition and subtraction clearly, often omitting working for multi-step problems—she sometimes is too quick to give an answer or gets confused about what number is used for what part of solving the question.

In Year 8, a student's decimals work was held back by difficulty lining up columns when adding or subtracting, making errors harder to spot.

For a senior student (Year 10), test revision focused only on familiar fraction types; less time went into practicing new question formats.

When homework was missed without notice in Years 7 and 9, gaps in skill development persisted into following lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Bicton tutor noticed a big shift in one high school student, Poppy, who previously hesitated with algebra but now rearranges equations on her own and is even tackling multiplication with brackets—something she used to avoid.

Another secondary student, Chloe, moved from needing hints to solve improper-to-mixed fraction questions to working through most of them confidently and making only minor mistakes.

With a younger learner, Xavier, sessions have focused on building independence; he now counts digits without being prompted and tries new problems solo instead of waiting for help. Last week, he finished all his addition exercises unassisted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bicton Primary School.
