I consider the time and space a tutor gives to the student the most important thing. It is all about what they, as the student, are comfortable with. However, this does not stop another important aspect; pushing a student through their limits in order to achieve their goals. These are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to show them that they have great potential, as well as leave them with invaluable lessons that they will call upon throughout the rest of their education journey. - I am young and I am a very social person, which means that building a rapport with young students comes very…

Personally, I believe that students come to tutors for a reason: commitment. Even though I am not an official school teacher, I try to make sure that students walk out of the tutoring session with a reasonable understanding of a particular topic, despite the fact that they might have learned about it at school already. I think it is necessary that…

I think a tutor should create a comfortable environment where students feel confident asking questions without worrying about making mistakes. Beyond improving marks, a tutor should help students understand the reasoning behind problems so they can apply what they've learned independently. The power of being non-judgmental. A tutor must understand that every student has different learning capabilities and focus more on students that find it difficult to grasp concepts without belittling them. I believe I have two strengths as a tutor- 1. I do not follow the status quo/ set pattern of teaching. I like to mix things up so that my…

Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership of their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students gain clarity in the concepts they don't understand well from school. And practice is key. A tutor should know the student's learning style well and be able to cater to their needs. I think the most important thing is patience as not all students are fast learner. Sometimes repetition is needed in tutoring and we need to stay calm and cool while explaining it repeatedly. Also, communication skills are essential. A good tutor knows how to deliver the subject so that it is easy to be understood by the student. 1. Patience 2.…

Inside BictonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Xavier focused on adding and subtracting larger numbers, practising three-digit addition and takeaways to build confidence with bigger values.

In Year 7, Alice revised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as tackling measurement conversions such as millimetres to kilometres using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Max worked through algebraic equations involving variables alongside adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions that include variables.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student struggled to set out addition and subtraction clearly, often omitting working for multi-step problems—she sometimes is too quick to give an answer or gets confused about what number is used for what part of solving the question.

In Year 8, a student's decimals work was held back by difficulty lining up columns when adding or subtracting, making errors harder to spot.

For a senior student (Year 10), test revision focused only on familiar fraction types; less time went into practicing new question formats.

When homework was missed without notice in Years 7 and 9, gaps in skill development persisted into following lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Bicton tutor noticed a big shift in one high school student, Poppy, who previously hesitated with algebra but now rearranges equations on her own and is even tackling multiplication with brackets—something she used to avoid.

Another secondary student, Chloe, moved from needing hints to solve improper-to-mixed fraction questions to working through most of them confidently and making only minor mistakes.

With a younger learner, Xavier, sessions have focused on building independence; he now counts digits without being prompted and tries new problems solo instead of waiting for help. Last week, he finished all his addition exercises unassisted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bicton Primary School.
