The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is, in my opinion, make them feel capable and really understand the material at a core level and not just memorise the material. I think my strength as a tutor would definitely be patience and being able to take the time to be slow and gentle while explaining topics to…

I truly believe this will be actively listening and giving plenty of feedback. A good tutor will always make sure that the student really understands the concept and knows how to effectively teach the student in a way that works for them. Different students have different ways of learning and it’s the tutors responsibility to make sure that they…

Inside BlairmountTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Sarah focused on multiplying and dividing whole numbers, as well as simplifying fractions through targeted worksheets.

In Year 9, James tackled trigonometric ratios—sin, cos, and tan—and practiced applying the Pythagorean theorem to right-angled triangles while also reviewing bearings and triangle angle properties.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily worked on linear relationships by finding equations for straight lines in both intercept and general forms, along with identifying gradients and y-intercepts using real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student often resisted writing answers independently, preferring to discuss and have the tutor write them—"he is defiant with writing the answers himself"—which limited his engagement in comprehension tasks.

In Year 9 mathematics, one student struggled with organizing solutions, making it harder to follow their algebraic working; as a tutor observed, "I advised the student to organize his solutions and try to practice writing complete solutions."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student repeatedly mixed up the gradient and y-intercept when rearranging linear equations, leading to confusion during graphing tasks. This resulted in extra time spent clarifying basics rather than progressing onto advanced content.

Recent Achievements

One Blairmount tutor noticed a Year 4 student who used to fidget and hesitate now eagerly joins in with rhyming activities, staying focused throughout the session.

In high school, one student who previously relied on step-by-step help for geometry problems has started explaining his reasoning aloud and tackling questions more independently, even applying new strategies without prompting.

Another secondary student made a breakthrough with quadratic equations: after struggling to factorise non-monic quadratics, she managed to use the general formula correctly and began setting equations equal to zero unprompted. She finished by completing several examples using her own working out.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blairmount Public School.
