I believe that in order for anyone to understand the material being taught - the tutor must begin with the fundamentals and basics; breaking down the information and then ensuring the student is able to explain it back is what I believe works best. This requires patience, which I believe is an essential quality a tutor must maintain in order for…

A tutor should be able understand the learning style of a student and have the ability to explain a concept in multiple ways to ensure that the student is confident with a concept.…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond simply imparting knowledge. First and foremost, it's about building a strong rapport and trust with the student, creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment. A tutor should identify and address the individual needs and challenges of each student, adapting their…

In my opinion the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to set the student up in a positive mindset towards learning. This includes encouraging the student to strive in their academic life as well as assist them in understanding methods they can use to seek support in learning different concepts. Being a high school student not…

The most important things a tutor can do is to tailor their lessons to suit their individual students as every student learns differently and has different learning needs. It is also important that the tutor has knowledge on the curriculum that the student is being taught at school so they can align what they teach what the student is learning at…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, adapt to their learning style, and make learning engaging. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for their student is remaining patient and continue to persevere with the content. In my experience, if I didn't understand a concept or was struggling with a question, it was extremely helpful when my tutor continued to talk me through the topic and didn't get frustrated at me for not…

A tutor has to be patient and welcoming for their students. The reason these students come for tutoring is because they face difficulty keeping up with school. So they should be given the space to understand at their own pace, in their own method and a teacher needs to recognize that. We need to recognize the method which we choose to teach a…

Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. Subjects can be tough, as a tutor, I need to find ways to convey the same subject in an easier, convenient way to understand it.…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student become **independent in their thinking**. It’s easy to just show solutions, but that creates dependency. A good tutor instead builds the student’s ability to approach problems on their own—how to think, how to break things down, and how to recover when they’re stuck. That…

A tutor needs to help identify a student's strong points and motivate the students in every possible way. It's not always the tutor that should be valued and respected but the students also needs the same respect and care. Also, a tutor should know how to boost up the morale of a student when he/she is feeling low. If student is facing some…

I think that a tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. A tutor is meant to be that person whose teaching is tailored, so it requires an individualized approach, picked up and constantly adjusted as needs change and develop. Being able to help a student achieve future problems on their own by helping them understand how to do a problem rather than just providing the solution is one of the most important things I consider a tutor can do for a student. Inside BolivarTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Tom focused on calculating area for both simple and composite shapes, as well as reviewing key area formulas.

Year 9 student Archie worked through simplifying ratios and revisited BIDMAS and fractions after receiving his test results.

Meanwhile, Isobel in Year 10 tackled converting fractions to percentages alongside practising addition and subtraction with fractions, using real-world examples where possible.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 maths, a student often left place value work incomplete and struggled to justify number patterns—"she can answer but doesn't understand why," noted a tutor. This made follow-up questions on sequences difficult.

By Year 7, another student hesitated to talk through problem-solving steps in composite shapes, preferring to guess rather than explain reasoning, which led to confusion when units or operations were missed.

In senior years (Year 11), heavy reliance on calculators replaced working out multiplication by hand, especially during exam-style questions; as one tutor observed, "she wasn't confident with arithmetic and defaulted straight to the calculator."

Recent Achievements

A Bolivar tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to rush through maths problems and overlook mistakes; now, she's gotten into the habit of backchecking her work and caught every error herself last session.

Another high school student recently began talking through his approach out loud—he'd usually stay quiet and guess before, but now he explains his thinking and spots where he might go wrong.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once struggled with reading analogue clocks can now both read times accurately and confidently draw clock hands when asked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burton Community Hub Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Pines School.
