The most important thing for a tutor is to provide a fun learning environment for the student and empower them to learn. A tutor should be able to motivate the students to organise, formulate study goals and most importantly self learn and self improve. I am a very results-oriented person and one of my key strengths as a tutor is being able to…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. However, this can be challenging especially when they have many knowledge gaps and feel fallen behind at school. A good tutor is able to identify and fill in those gaps, helping students realise their full potentials and gain confidence. It is also important…

I consider that a tutor should be a good teacher but also a good person. He should be able to communicate and transmit his passion to give the desire to learn. I would consider a connection to (and understanding of) the student to be the most important thing for a one on one tutoring relationship. Without a thorough understanding of their needs and situation, one cannot properly assess the best way to assist in their learning. I'm very personable, able to chat with anyone about almost anything. My high…

A tutor should be strict about discipline but at the same time friendly and lenient understanding students problem. He should be available on phone all the time for his students during the exam period. Also, the tutor has to get some real-life problems and repeat the same basic concepts repeatedly so that the student memorises it for a long time.…

I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. Support, guide, motivate and teach the student until he don't understand. A tutor should get sense of satisfaction after his student gets satisfied. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is pose as their mentor than just a teacher. By doing this, a student will feel safe, and empowered; this in turn will make them learn better. Moreover, it is important for a tutor to build their confidence. It is essential to build on the weak areas of a student. Additionally, a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence alongside their understanding. It’s not just about getting the right answer; it's about helping them believe they can get there themselves. Creating a supportive, non-judgmental space is really important, as is adaptability and attention to each student's needs. A…

Communication is very important, as it is vital that the student is able to convey any questions, misunderstandings or opinions to the tutor for a tailored tutoring experience to occur. It is also at the same time that the tutor needs to be precise and straightforward with their explanation on different concepts. I think I generally build a…

I feel a tutor must be able to invoke a sense of interest and joy in a students minds for the subject they teach. As a tutor, you are someone who has studied the subject beforehand and are more knowledgeable about the subject than a student who is just starting out. This makes it difficult for tutors to reach their maximum potential while teaching…

I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

Inside BowdenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student William built confidence with long addition and practiced multiplication strategies, using written methods for clarity.

For Year 10, Grace tackled trigonometry—solving triangles with ratios and applying Pythagoras' theorem to worded geometric problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben focused on financial maths by working through house loan calculations and variable interest scenarios, learning to solve for unknowns using a calculator.

Recent Challenges

Over several year levels, process-related habits are holding back progress.

For example, a Year 8 student relied heavily on their calculator in mental arithmetic tasks—"still needs to work on this," one tutor noted—which led to hesitation when the calculator was unavailable.

In Year 11, anxiety during calculus drills caused skipped checks and repeated mistakes under time pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner often left homework incomplete and needed reminders to review past errors instead of moving on quickly.

Across both junior and senior years, confusion with terminology like "mode" versus "mean" resulted in wasted effort on the wrong methods mid-assessment.

Recent Achievements

A Bowden tutor recently saw a Year 10 student who had struggled to use mental maths confidently begin applying new shortcuts in their working, even tackling practice questions without prompting—something they'd previously avoided.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student took real initiative by openly explaining the exact points where they got stuck in class and then worked through solutions step by step with much less hesitation than before.

Meanwhile, one of our younger students started attempting larger addition problems independently and no longer waits for reassurance before trying each question.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hindmarsh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Immaculate Heart of Mary School.
