i consider giving time to each student and make them comfortable so that they can ask u all of their doubts on the subject and clear everyone of them. I is most important to be friendly to students to make them comfortable with asking their doubts. i think my greatest strength is patience, since it requires a lot of patience to clear doubts of…

I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to make learning simple, build the student's confidence, and create a safe space where they don't feel scared to ask questions. A tutor should be patient, supportive, and able to explain concepts in different ways until the student really understands. Most importantly, a tutor should motivate…

I think it is a tutor's job to make the subject fun for the kid and make them love the subject, not develop a hate for it. I used to hate chemistry back in highschool and found it very hard until I found a tutor who made me understand it and I eventually started to love the subject. I ended up getting an A* in the subject. I would want to follow…

Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

The most important you can do for a student is to know their abilities and work their capabilities to make them better at the subject they're trying to get better at. It is also important to understand every student is different and not all of them can grapple a concept quickly. But as a tutor, I must make sure I am accounting for each students…

The most important thing to being a tutor is the passion towards teaching and the motivation to get the best results from his/her students. It is also crucial for a tutor to be friendly and approachable to every student. A tutor has to be mature which will help them to develop a special bond with all their students. It is highly important to be empathetic. I develop a strong bonding with my students 2. I try…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teaching the student to adapt to and overcome any and all learning challenges by looking at a problem from all angles. I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. It is always for me to put their thoughts first and give them the importance. It is simply how a student learn and grow. As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. Mildred, Bowen Hills

Inside Bowen HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia worked on finding areas between curves using integrals and tackled equation manipulation through pattern recognition exercises.

In Year 10, Emily focused on matrices—identifying when pairs can be multiplied and practicing basic matrix multiplication along with identity matrices.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Max revised operations with fractions (including converting improper to mixed fractions) and explored divisibility tricks to strengthen number sense.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Specialist Maths, a student hesitated to start unfamiliar worded questions and struggled with forming equations from problem statements; as one tutor observed, "she didn't know where to begin when creating an equation for vectors."

In Year 9 algebra, another found it difficult to break down complex problems, often skipping the use of diagrams and missing key command words in exam questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student regularly mixed up the order in division calculations—verbally reversing $98 ÷ $4.50 despite writing steps correctly—which led to confusion when interpreting answers on word problems involving money.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bowen Hills recently saw a Year 11 student who, after doubting her ability with trigonometry, surprised herself by accurately applying equations and confidently working through quadratic tangent problems on her own.

In another session, a Year 9 boy who used to rush and make small errors has started slowing down during calculations—he now checks his working for mistakes and is quick to fix them if something doesn't look right.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated to speak up brought in a tricky maths test question she couldn't solve at school and asked to tackle it together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bulimba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fortitude Valley State Secondary College.
