I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence. It's not just about helping them get the right answers, but about making them feel capable and supported in their learning journey. When a student believes in themselves, they’re more likely to stay motivated, take initiative, and keep improving—even…

I think listening is the most important thing that anyone can do. Jumping to conclusions doesn't help anyone, it only creates more misunderstanding. Really, actively listening to what the student is trying to say and get across can help both of you to understand each other and make the experience better for both of us. One of my strengths is my…

Be approachable such that they are able to ask you questions and feel comfortable rather than stressed out like a teacher may make them at school. It is important that a tutor makes the student feel that they are in a comfortable environment, so that the student feels willing and ready to learn. The tutor must ensure that the student does not feel ashamed or embarrassed about the areas of their learning that they may be struggling with. Instead, the tutor should encourage the student to…

I think that the most significant thing a tutor can do for a student is to work with the students inherent interests and aptitudes. When I reflect on the teachers and tutors that had the biggest impact on my schooling, the individuals that stand out are the ones that recognized and challenged me in the areas I naturally gravitated towards. I…

I think the biggest thing a tutor should not do is view the student from their own perspective, as that can lead to biases and frustration with a student not understanding a certain piece of content. Everything needs to be looked at through a lens, so that the correct procedures can be taken to ensure the student has a favourable experience. I…

To encourage them to persevere even when they find their studies difficult. My opinion is that equipping them with the knowledge they need is only a small part of the job. Communication. Being able to answer questions a student may have, on top of that a student being able to tell their tutor they aren't keeping up with the lesson, or their mind's not in a good learning space is really important Asking questions of the student to understand their knowledge and where they're at with a given…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. The most important thing I would say, would be to cater to each student's unique method of learning. There are many ways of digesting information and of understanding, many students struggle in school because they are forced to fit into only one or two ways of studying and learning, which may not be the most helpful for them. I as a tutor, pay…

Local Reviews

As a busy family, having the convenience of a tutor come into the house has made it so much easier for us to commit to weekly tutoring. Our tutor is on time and has been helpful for my daughter understanding maths concepts that were challenging her.

Inside Box HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jamie revised linear functions by identifying x and y axes, finding intercepts, and calculating gradients before plotting coordinates on graphs.

In Year 8, Priya focused on angles in parallel lines, using diagrams to solve for unknown values and reviewing types of angles from term content.

For a Year 9 session, Daniel tackled statistics by constructing frequency tables and bar graphs, then calculated mean, median, mode, and explored box-and-whisker plots to interpret data visually.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student in algebra avoided showing full working when finding gradients from two points—she skipped steps in equations, which made it hard to spot calculation errors.

In a senior statistics session, incomplete homework on box-and-whisker plots left key gaps; the student hesitated during IQR questions.

A Year 6 student's written work was messy and lacked clear layout in long division, leading to repeated confusion with remainders.

Meanwhile, one primary learner struggled to focus during word problem tasks and guessed answers rather than writing solutions—a rushed approach that led to unfinished revision sheets by lesson's end.

Recent Achievements

One Box Hill tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with graph sketching now confidently draws accurate line graphs from just the equation, no prompting needed.

In a recent high school session, another student who previously second-guessed herself with linear equations was able to recall lesson objectives and solve for unknowns without pausing or asking for help.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled with simplifying fractions finally managed to use long division independently by the end of their lesson—after starting out unsure, he worked through several problems on his own and got them right.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Sion College.
