Helping students feel confident in their abilities creates a strong foundation for learning, as they are more likely to engage actively and tackle challenges head-on.…

As a tutor, I encourage my students to truly understand the course material, rather than aimlessly memorize the content. To do this it is important to be supportive, but firm. Ultimately, I want to help my students recognize the potential within themselves. I graduated in 2019 with an ATAR of 99.00. I have tutored 14 students over 3 years. I am…

I believe the role of the tutor is to build the basic skills of english comprehension/essay writing to that the student is prepared to tackle any assignment or examination. I do not believe in rote learning but instead on delving deeply into specific issues a student may have with writing and to address them methodically. It is not about the…

This openness allows the tutor to tailor their approach to meet each student’s unique needs, ensuring the most effective and…

Encouraging students to tackle challenges in their studies themselves through teaching useful study skills is just as important as being a resource for learning the content. Increasing a student's grade or helping them understand a single concept are just some of the things that most people look for in a tutor. While these are undoubtedly worthwhile indicators of a tutor's ability to teach a student, they are often mercurial and temporary once the tutoring stops. I firmly believe that what differentiates a good tutor…

The ability to understand a student and their learning style is something I highly value in a tutor. In school classes where they are often one of many, they may find that the teaching style may not work for them and that they cannot achieve their goals. In a tutoring scenario, we are able to cater to them more specifically, to be intuitive about…

I think having a good personality is the most important thing as a tutor. This is because an educator is supposed to be patient, calm and helpful in front of his/her students. If he/she can't do that, he/she will always be in arguments with the students and thus mutual trusts between them will be lost. I think I have a good academic backgrounds…

Naturally, a tutor's main priority is to provide profound and thorough knowledge through clear communication. This includes patience and listening, aforementioned, and trust. As a tutor, it is inevitable that…

Inside Box Hill SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Summer practised reading aloud with expressive punctuation and worked on multiplication, division, and order of operations using BIDMAS.

In Year 9, Jolie completed a timed selective-school style maths test and reviewed errors in both ACER Maths and Science practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student covered simultaneous equations from the Cambridge VCE Methods 1&2 textbook and was introduced to basic trigonometry concepts along with calculator skills relevant for VCE Methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which made it hard to spot calculation slips. This meant more time spent searching for mistakes instead of building confidence.

During Year 7 fractions and ratios, answers were sometimes written without full working—especially when converting between percentages and decimals—which left the logic behind his solutions unclear.

In senior functions, there was a tendency to avoid writing out all transformations or endpoints when graphing hybrid functions; this led to confusion mid-question and slowed progress.

When worded problems appeared in both Years 8 and 11, hesitation with identifying key terms often blocked him from forming equations at all.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Box Hill South recently saw Annabel, a senior student, move from confusion to independence with logarithms—she now solves exponentials with different bases on her own after previously needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, James (Year 10) was struggling to interpret worded maths questions but now independently translates them into algebraic expressions and substitutes values accurately, a shift from earlier hesitation and guesswork.

In Year 5, Jacob had difficulty handling negative numbers; using number lines during his {Box Hill South tutoring} session helped him visualise the process so well that he now completes these calculations unaided.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kingswood College.
