I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student to be providing the student with the toolbox to be able to solve problems effectively in the chosen subject. In addition, a tutor can provide the student with confidence and belief in oneself, which helps the student academically, and in general. My strengths as a tutor include very…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is support and mentor a student, not just teach the content. That means creating a safe, encouraging space where they feel comfortable asking questions, building their confidence, and being guided. A good tutor also helps students develop better study habits and self-belief, setting them up for…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage and empower them. I believe most students can learn most subjects/tasks but it's just about finding the way of learning that works for them. I am positive and encouraging. I believe a student can learn anything if they are engaged in the subject matter and they have…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should not just provide answers, but also guide the student in developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking, so they can succeed beyond the tutoring…

According to me, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage him and build up the confidence by giving the student positive feedback and helpful suggestions. Also, a tutor should always have an openness and adaptability to dynamic changes to understand situation with empathy as well as common sense. I believe my…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is affirm their self-worth as a learner and as an individual. It can be frustrating not being able to figure something out, but it becomes a lot less daunting without extreme expectations. I think my strengths as a tutor lie in my patience and my creativity. It's certainly not an easy task learning…

Personal connection would be my important factor in tutoring, having a good basic relationship and being able to build upon that will make communicating to the student much easier. I believe that there is often a barrier between teachers and students in a school system and sometimes that barrier may affect an individual student, it transforms into…

Having the ability to be understanding and change tactics when a student needs a different perspective on a problem requires patience and strong understanding of…

Build a trusting relationship with them that makes them feel comfortable asking questions, as the large classroom environment sometimes intimidates kids and makes them feel like a question they want to ask is 'dumb' because everyone else seems fine with the concept (even though they usually aren't). Build their confidence as much as their knowledge because a lot of students struggle not because they are incapable, but because they are convinced themselves they can’t do it. Beyond that, I think it’s important to teach a student how to think through a problem rather than just giving them the answer. The goal is to make them capable enough…

It is so important for tutors to adapt their method of teaching to the way the student learns. Every student not only has different needs and difficulties, but learns concepts differently. It is extremely important to regularly re-evaluate the student's objectives. Modifying your approach as a tutor to make the student feel comfortable and…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is understand how each student learns best and adapt their teaching accordingly. Give the student the foundational skills to excel on the own once outside of tutoring. A good tutor will be able to get their student to a level where they feel competent to work by themselves, and know both how to solve a problem, and why we approach the problem the way we do. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

Inside Breakfast PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Imogen worked on converting between fractions and decimals, as well as identifying factors and multiples using number patterns.

For Year 8, Amber tackled expanding algebraic brackets and moved on to factorising expressions with practice problems.

In Year 11, Hannah reviewed the measurement of economic growth along with understanding the marginal propensity to consume/save and applying the simple multiplier formula through real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Mathematics, Tyler often skipped setting out his working clearly, especially when expanding brackets or solving algebraic fractions. As one tutor noted, "he worked out answers in his head instead of writing steps," leading to confusion over operation signs and missed terms.

During exam revision, he sometimes neglected assigned homework, which meant foundational skills—like inequalities and rates—were not fully reinforced.

In senior Economics (Year 12), rushing through comprehension tasks led to overlooked errors and difficulty connecting ideas between texts. This left gaps during practice exams when questions required deeper analysis under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

In Year 8 maths, Tyler used to struggle with algebraic fractions but now solves them independently and even applies those skills when tackling new exam-style questions.

Meanwhile, a senior student working on Business Studies essays moved from mainly descriptive writing to more analytical responses after targeted feedback—now she edits her work to focus on argument rather than just content.

For English, Zarraf was once hesitant to share ideas aloud but now maintains eye contact and elaborates thoughtfully during discussions, especially when prompted by the text.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
