Understanding Empathizing I believe in teaching mathematics with empathy, understanding that every student learns at their own pace. I create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, as I see them as essential steps in the learning process. By breaking down complex concepts into relatable,…

primarily, tutors provide a one-on-one environment wherein students have the time and attention to ask questions and get help with the specific concepts they struggle with. Additionally, tutors provide a space where students can work on extending their understanding of subjects beyond the curriculum, and get a head start on future concepts. In my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is understand the student's mind and help them achieve their goal. The tutor can help them achieve their goal if they have difficulties and help them understand the basic concept. My strength as a tutor is the most important aspect of understanding the student. The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to encourage him/her to pursue a career in their liking and to empathise with their difficulties and teach them how to overcome them. It is also of utmost importance that a tutor must lower themselves to their understanding to teach a student. Passion to teach and a drive to progress as an…

The most important thing of a tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. A tutor should be someone to whom a student can approach with any sorts of problem with the expectation that their tutor can find a solution to it. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

A tutor can increase a student's confidence in their abilities through consolidation of concepts. This is important as to do well in any subject, a student needs to believe in themselves and their capabilities. A tutor or a teacher builds his student's knowledge, clears any misconceptions if he have, clears their sight between right and wrong behaviors, help them to achieve their learning goals and to decide what they want to be in future. Apart from a good communication and knowledge, patience is one of the most important strengths required in a teacher…

Changing the perspective of the subject. I know too many teachers that have made an already challenging subject even more difficult. I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them skills they can use in life. It's not just about teaching them how to do a single problem, it's how to solve problems down the track. It's also about giving them the confidence in themselves, being confident means they will be less stressed and be able to do their best…

Inside BrightonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Archie revised area and perimeter of different shapes for a zoo project, using practical examples.

In Year 10, Reagan focused on polynomial operations—specifically division—and discussed approaches to Physics questions around atoms and radiation.

For Year 12, Jack worked through exponentials and logarithms by debriefing a quiz, then tackled exam-style applications involving log laws to strengthen understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Methods student was "reluctant to rely on algebra to solve problems as he can do 99% of stuff in his head," which led to missed steps and made error tracing difficult—especially in polynomial division.

In Physics (Year 12), a student didn't complete set homework on worked examples for constant acceleration, meaning less time could be spent consolidating challenging concepts during the session.

For a Year 6 student, online lessons meant the tutor "couldn't see his working out"—making it hard to spot process gaps when tackling algebra. The result: real-time feedback was limited, slowing progress.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brighton noticed one Year 10 student who had always hesitated to ask for help during sessions now openly stopped and checked his understanding when working through challenging synthetic division questions, instead of guessing as before.

In a senior physics session, another student made a breakthrough with Hubble's law after struggling previously—she explained the connection herself between mass-energy equivalence and EMR entirely in her own words.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to mix up fraction subtraction was able to solve all problems independently involving subtracting fractions from whole numbers without prompts and even checked his answers independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brighton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brighton Grammar School.
