In school, the subject teacher need to face a relatively large group of students, so their teaching style and pace of lesson are more inclined to fit the majority but not everyone. Therefore when it comes to private tuition, the tutor conducting one-to-one lesson can focus on the student himself and personalize the lesson in a way that this…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

The most important thing for me is to be able to make a student understand a topic throughly by going over it patiently not just make him/ her rope-learn it. I am an enthusiastic individual with a great amount of passion for teaching. I am a patient individual who will repeat a topic over and over again until the student understand it…

One of the most important things I can do for a student is to understand their current level of knowledge and identify any gaps in their understanding. Every student learns at a different pace and may struggle with different aspects of a subject, so it is important to first determine where they are academically before planning how best to support…

Definitions and basic rules and concepts are very important in order to have a solid foundation. By slowly building up the theory and applying it to problems, students can use logic and reasoning to eventually solve difficult situations. Apart from this, inspiring a genuine interest in the subject is something I value as a tutor. I am extremely…

A tutor can tailor there style much more closely to the individual needs of the student, provide a more focused approach and cover the material the student needs help with the most, and go beyond the basic material to challenge the student and inspire them to learn. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is listen to and understand their goals as an individual person and then try their best to help them reach and exceed their academic goals. It is important to be able to break down concepts into an individualised way that caters to an individual so that the student is able to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to deepen/ignite their interest in the area which they are teaching or make a student come to love a subject they struggled with before. Furthermore, as a tutor, I feel that helping a student build a strong foundation of knowledge is important as future knowledge they learn would…

Help them actually understand the material, not just get the right answer that one time. Keep their confidence up so they don't start believing they're just bad at the subject. And honestly, work myself out of a job a little, teach them habits they can use on their own instead of making them rely on you. I'm patient, I'll explain something three…

Beyond conveying information, the most critical role of a tutor is to build a student's confidence and ignite their curiosity. I reckon the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student is spending time with them, listening, sympathising, effectively communicating and building connections with them. School curriculum is not designed for any particular students, so many of them can't study the way they find the most suitable and easiest for them, resulting in the need…

To a greater extent success depends on the students` commitment to their studies, not as much what we as tutors do. I consider confidence building to be a priority for a tutor. If a student is not confident in their own abilities, they will not be able to grow as a learner and eventually take on the more challenging problems themselves. A pivotal element in building confidence in students is creating a friendly and welcoming environment in which they can reach…

Inside BulleenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Chloe focused on operations with negative numbers and began working through fraction concepts using visual aids.

A Year 9 student tackled solving equations and revisited her recent school test, targeting areas she got wrong and clarifying simultaneous equations and indices.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student worked through finance chapters—reviewing compound interest calculations and completing revision questions ahead of an upcoming SAC to reinforce understanding of real-world applications.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was set targeted homework but often left these tasks incomplete, which limited consolidation—one tutor noted, "She should find some time to do some homework questions that I set for her."

In Year 12 Maths Methods, a tendency to misread or rush through exam-style questions meant correct methods were applied to the wrong part, resulting in lost marks: "she does the right method but provides an incorrect answer which the question may not be particularly asking."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 learner hesitated to persist when stuck on trigonometry problems and would quickly move on without exploring alternative approaches.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bulleen recently noticed a Year 10 student who had struggled with simultaneous equations finally solve several complex examples independently, after weeks of needing step-by-step guidance.

Another high schooler, preparing for VCE maths, reviewed past exam papers and confidently tackled previously missed questions—she could now explain her approach without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to avoid asking for help has started openly voicing when she's stuck on fractions, which let her master adding unlike denominators during their last session. The lesson finished with her completing all fraction tasks accurately on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bulleen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Clement of Rome School.
