Involvement of the student . If a tutor or a teacher is not able to make his/her student involved and self motivated to study then the whole effort as well as time of both teacher and student go waiste. I try to put my efforts as a mentor wholeheartedly to make my students clear about the concepts and put more emphasis on quality not quantity.…

Develop a good rapport with the student so they are open to expressing their fears/weaknesses. Where the student does not open us, assess exactly which area the student needs help in and focus their energy there. I develop professional relationships with students quite easily, and that helps break the ice. They are more open to receiving coaching.…

Regarding the most important things a tutor can do for a student, I believe enthusiasm and expertise are crucial. Having had tutors and teachers for most of my life, I've learned that the teacher plays a vital role in the learning process. If the teacher is passionate and engaging about what they teach, it makes the subject genuinely interesting.…

I realised that the real challenge often isn't the students' abilities but their engagement with the content. My goal as a tutor is to approach material proactively, sparking curiosity and encouraging students to ask 'why?' and 'how?' instead of passively accepting information at face value. I believe in creating an environment where students feel…

Provide a safe environment for them to question things. To teach students how to ask the right questions. Efficient questioning. To spark curiosity and interest, that they my also push themselves out of their own desire to learn more. And in doing all of this, will in turn build their self confidence. I can teach things clearly and simply. As…

A significant factor that tutors must take into consideration when teaching students is developing a positive relationship where the student can feel safe and confident to improve upon their educational needs and goals. Many students may feel vulnerable or ashamed when being tutored as they may feel lesser than others. Therefore, it is extremely…

The most prominent thing is to work according to the level of child. For example, some students love to study through animations and some by real world examples and also some by doing practicals or activities. Hence; its the duty of a tutor to find the way of teaching that interacts a student and make it interesting for a child to explore that…

Guidance. It's always guidance. Tutors facilitate learning and help activates students' potential. :) Tutors receive all the questions most of the students don't ask in class, and I find it amazing because real learning happens between tutors and students. I already know how to handle them and I can give excellent activities that they can enjoy…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that learners would feel safe and secured when they are being attended to. Aside from that, a tutor should also consider the transfer of knowledge where tutors act as facilitators for the students learning. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is teach a student how to be conscientious in their work, how to learn effectively and efficiently, and problem solve for themselves. These traits are important life skills that can be gained through education/schooling that they will inevitably have to apply in their maturation into…

To be flexible. Every one of us is a one-of-a-kind human being. This fact is so important that as a tutor, being flexible in the teaching approach will help the students grow in their own way without being forced to follow others' approaches. Empathy and communication skills. Having been working since I was 16, my mindset has changed ever since.…

A tutor can show a student why instead of just how. Students step into academics and are shown what to do and how to do it, but they don't understand why until much later on in life. A tutor is in a way a parent, trying to teach their child. Essentially, their future depends on how well they have been prepared, no matter how small the…

I think a tutor needs to be patient and easy going in a way that students can be comfortable with, and question things they feel unable to question in their school classroom. In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. What a tutor should and need to do are guiding a child to enhance their strengths and improve their weaknesses with all of the power invested in ourselves; reminding and figuring out what their barriers are to success (such as are they afraid of they can't pass? or they are not receiving any support from their beloved ones?). In my power, I'd do…

Inside BurnsideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Alice focused on rearranging algebraic equations to solve for x in more complex solutions and applied index laws 4–6 using worked examples.

Another Year 10, Ben, practiced simultaneous equations alongside worded problems involving inequalities, then reviewed parabola intercepts and turning points through pre-test analysis.

For Year 9, Sarah revised box and whisker plots by constructing five-number summaries and identifying outliers, then differentiated between mean, median, mode, IQR, and range when interpreting real data sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on advanced Methods content hesitated to show full algebraic steps, which made it difficult to spot sign errors—"he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 learner preparing for a test grew noticeably distracted and rushed through perimeter problems after studying for multiple assessments the day before.

In English, a Year 10 student struggled to link evidence clearly to essay prompts, making arguments less convincing.

During a Year 4 session, anxiety about getting answers wrong led to hesitation and incomplete written working in worded maths questions.

Recent Achievements

A Burnside tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating to speak up, began actively pointing out mistakes in both their own and others' working during sessions—showing real growth in self-monitoring and willingness to engage.

In Year 9 maths, one student moved from needing step-by-step support with trigonometry to independently recalling the SOHCAHTOA acronym and applying it confidently to worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who used to rush through ratio questions now takes time to explain her reasoning for each answer, clearly demonstrating deeper understanding by talking through her process without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Caroline Springs Library & Learning Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burnside Primary School.
