To give the student the tools they need to be able to improve on their own, and to help them pinpoint the areas they are weaker in. Helping a student understand questions and teaching them how to approach different styles of questions is also key for improvement. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to be patient, supportive, and encouraging. A tutor should help the student understand the material, build confidence, and develop good study habits so they can learn on their own too. I think my strength as a tutor lies in being empathetic and focused on each student’s unique…

Ensure that the student is gaining confidence and is improving. I believe its not the final result that counts, but its ensuring the student's mental health is taken care or whilst the student is experiencing a steady improvement. I believe I am a person with strong moral values that can grasp concepts relatively quickly. I also memorise content…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are as follows: -create a learning environment that is supportive, where making mistakes is encouraged as it’s the only way to improve. -make learning something fun and rewarding not just another arduous task that has to be done. -boost self confidence by showing the student that they can…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

As stated, giving the correct guidance and the motivation for the correct way to study is extremely important. As is well knwon, we can walk a horse to the water but cannot make him drink it, similarly giving the syllabus content and teaching the subject is important, however, the most important part it to mame sure the student knows in the first…

First, I think a tutor should have good subject and curriculum knowledge so that they may be able to provide as much information as they can towards the kids. I think communication skills is another important thing a tutor must have (the way they explain the topics so that it is easy for the students to understand). Finally a tutor must be patient…

Being able to provide support. Sometimes, a student just needs someone to talk to- and knowing that they've been through the same thing that they have, it empowers them and encourages them to make proactive decisions in their learning. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students motivated and…

The tutor should understand his subject matter to be able to deliver complicated ideas to the students simply and concisely. A tutor does not just teach a student a particular subject. I believe that the most important function of a tutor is to foster overall academic confidence in a student and to develop better study techniques/learning habits more generally. A good tutor can give a student motivation and techniques to achieve not only in the tutored subject, but in…

Inside BurswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Patrick worked on addition and tallies using dice games to build number fluency, then began practicing basic column addition for improved calculation skills.

In Year 9, Charlotte focused on solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, as well as drawing linear graphs to visualise solutions.

For Year 10, Ethan revised trigonometry with a focus on finding unknown side lengths and angles in right-angled triangles, and practiced applying the Pythagoras theorem through targeted problem sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Chemistry struggled to keep her assessment notes both complete and accurate; as a tutor observed, "her cycles summary was slightly incorrect and incomplete," which meant extra revision time before tests.

In Year 9 Maths, another student leaned heavily on calculators for simultaneous equations, leading to less confidence with handwritten solutions during practice.

For a younger learner in Year 3, loss of focus during tallying tasks led to miscounts—he could verbally count but when writing, "something gets missed." The frustration grew visible after each error, often resulting in disengagement mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Burswood tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from needing step-by-step support with trigonometry to solving triangle problems independently, even selecting the correct rule (sin, cos, or tan) without prompting.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student who previously struggled with structuring investigations can now set out a clear plan for identifying unknowns and works through sample problems mostly unaided.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to guess when tallying numbers now checks his own work and almost always tallies correctly; last session he confidently totalled several dice on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Augustine's Primary School.
