Give them the best level of assistance to help them excel in their school studies. Also, motivational speeches to let them know that school is just the start of their journey! I think my main strength as a tutor is my ability to listen. I take my time to listen to what the student is saying and really understand what their goals are. This is a…

I think it's a question of what a tutor can BE rather than do. I found in my experience that I always responded to teachers who were enthusiastic and portrayed a genuine care for the learning of the student. In a metaphorical sense, the tutor must think like a student in an empathetic way rather than merely be a one way stream of instruction. If a…

Understanding the issues of a student. I believe that tutors should be able to understand why a student is struggling with something, and help them according to their strengths and weaknesses. A student won't be able to learn with advice that isn't applicable to them, because everyone's capability to learn isn't at the same level. Gaining a…

Being patient, understanding and ensuring that the tutor is in no way condescending towards the student. Being able to explain concepts age-appropriately is definitely…

As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence in their own ability. It's not just about getting the right answer, but helping them understand how to approach problems and trust their thinking. When students feel supported and capable, they’re much more willing to engage and improve. I think one of my main…

The most important thing a tutor can do is believe in the student. This along with teaching them the value of hard work is significant as it pushes a student to access their potential knowing that they are supported. The value of hard work is also an imperative that should be conveyed through the tutors lessons regardless of the content taught. I…

The tutor must create an environment of trust and respect to foster the tutor-tutee relationship. This in turn will make the student feel more accountable to the tutor to do well. The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and personable with the student. Tutoring is very different from a school environment, in that the benefits that exist are going at a pace that is suitable to the student's needs. Tutors are understanding and can target specific difficulties in a student's learning. We also not only identify…

I think some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student involve listening and understanding where they're really struggling to be able to help them effectively. Using a tailored learning program for all abilities and expectations, and an unfailing growth mindset, a tutor should provide students with a love of learning that leads to internal fulfillment and a virtuous cycle where concepts are pursued willingly, and thus, more thoroughly. However, a tutor is not only a teacher, but a mentor; they should…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their confidence and skills to be able to problem solve independently. Facilitate the student's own learning by equipping them with the tools to then seek out how to learn and solve problems, and allowing the student to go where they want to go. Patience and motivation are the main elements that are important as a tutor. As tutoring may be an outside source of school that is not compulsory, it is important to be able to push the students to revise on their work and properly understand their content to a higher level. Tutors are to act patient and as a role model for their students,…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. At the end of the day we only see them once or twice a week. We can't teach them everything. So it is important that we guide them on how to learn and study in order to be successful. Myt strength lies…

A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. A teacher that is passionate about subjects will…

Inside BurwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily practised multiplication and fractions, working through long division strategies to boost confidence.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on solving quadratic equations by factorisation and simplifying expressions, as well as exploring graph transformations using visual aids.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia revised simultaneous equations and functions—solving systems both algebraically and graphically—to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on quadratic equations often omitted key steps in their written solutions—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors—making it harder to identify mistakes.

In a Year 8 class, one student avoided homework and relied heavily on guessing answers instead of attempting the calculations, especially during worded problems.

For a Year 4 lesson, another child struggled to focus and frequently left tasks incomplete when practicing multiplication tables.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for exams did not attempt assigned practice papers outside lessons, resulting in less familiarity with time-pressured questions.

Recent Achievements

One Burwood tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to rely on step-by-step guidance now arriving at sessions with her own attempted exam questions, only needing small hints to push through tricky parts—she's even begun correcting her own mistakes before asking for help.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who struggled to keep up with homework is now consistently completing tasks on time and presenting neater working out in maths, showing real ownership of her learning.

In a younger class, one child who often hesitated to start tasks has started counting by twos independently and no longer says "I don't know" right away when faced with new problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burwood Library and Community Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burwood Public School.
