The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to clear the concepts. If a student knows the concept well then he/she can apply it to any problem pertaining to a particular topic. A tutor can do this by giving real world examples and discussing about the topic in general. Math is one of the most fun subjects to learn if one understands…

Increasing a student's grade or helping them understand a single concept are just some of the things that most people look for in a tutor. While these are undoubtedly worthwhile indicators of a tutor's ability to teach a student, they are often mercurial and temporary once the tutoring stops. I firmly believe that what differentiates a good tutor…

I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. You learn to grow with them, you make sure that your students are able to be successful, and you are a small contributor to that success, but along the way, you grow with them, you understand the way they learn, so that you could learn with them. I think that my strengths, are…

A tutor must be adaptable and proactive. They must observe a student's progress and deduce what method they learn best and adjust their teaching accordingly. Each student is different and has different capacities of learning and a good teacher must identify them for each student and make the best out of their unique potential. I can teach the…

I believe critical thinking is the most important skill that a tutor can bring to a student, since I think the responsibility of a tutor is to lead and motivate a student to complete their school tasks by themselves, rather than depending on help from a tutor. A tutor should also provide adequate solutions for different students. As I believe…

The most important thing a tutor does for a student is helping them become more confident, so that they have faith in their own abilities and performance. I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

Inside BurwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Flynn focused on understanding matrix multiplication and transformation matrices, working through worded questions to interpret their real-world applications.

In Year 10, Sucheta completed targeted revision for her upcoming probability test, including practice with Venn diagrams and the addition rule.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sam tackled graphing parabolas—finding range and domain—and solved worded problems involving both parabolas and hyperbolas, using visual methods to reinforce concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for SACs in advanced maths was advised to "write down lots of notes to take into his sacs," yet often relied on memory rather than organizing a clear reference book—this left him searching for definitions and methods mid-task.

In a Year 8 session, heavy dependence on calculators was noted; as one tutor put it, "very reliant on calculator need to ease off and start using paper working more to help with test work."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner struggled with homework conversions between fractions and decimals, leading to incomplete practice before class.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burwood recently noticed Flynn, a high school student, tackle financial and linear modules that had previously left him unsure—he now works through practice exams with only minor errors needing correction.

In another session, Tayla (Year 7) shifted from hesitating to speak up to regularly volunteering answers and openly asking for help when stuck—a big step compared to her initial quietness.

Meanwhile, Sucheta (senior years) mastered long division of polynomials after initially struggling; by the end of the lesson she was confidently solving them without support.
