In my view the most important contribution of a tutor is helping her student do well academically as well as in personal and professional life. It is not just about the concepts but also their practical implications and applications. In my view I have always been a good teacher to my students. Lucky enough to make a difference in their lives. My…

The biggest things a tutor can do for a student are to really get how each person learns and adapt their teaching to match. This makes learning enjoyable and effective for the student. I engage with and understand my students completely, enabling me to discover an easy approach for them to grasp concepts while finding enjoyment in the process. I…

I believe that understanding is the most important thing a tutor must do for a student. Without comprehension, the tutor would not be able to communicate with the student in the same language, making it impossible for the tutor to address the issue the student is having and come up with solutions to help the student's condition. I am currently…

I believe being able to provide individualised instructions is a crucial part of being a tutor. Tailoring teaching methods to suit the student's learning style, pace, and preferences ensures a more effective and personalised learning experience. Additionally, beyond academic achievements, a tutor should inspire a passion for learning and promote…

I think the most important thing a tutor can be for a student is patience. Everyone works and learns on different levels and it is up to the tutor to make the learning of the subject fun and enjoyable. My biggest strengths when tutoring are my passion for the subjects I talk about, and most importantly being calm and patient to those I…

A few important things a tutor can do for a student is to be understanding and non judgmental. A tutor should listen to the students' concern/s and work at the same pace as the student, not giving them too little or too much work. Always make sure to let the student know you are there to help them and not to keep quiet when a problem arises. In…

I firmly believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to personalise their learning experience. Every student is different and learns in their own way, being able to adapt to each student is what differentiates a good tutor from an amazing tutor. I think my strengths as a tutor is being able to find the best method of teaching…

A tutor should be understanding of their students' learning and study patterns and help them in a way that will benefit their students the most. A tutor should personally support and encourage their student to become more confident in themselves and their study areas alongside explaining content. Instill the resilience and capacity for students to dedicate and apply themselves to their learning rather than being dependent on a tutor to give them all the answers. I consider guidance as the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Teachers are important but sometimes they can be carried away by teaching a large group of students in the class. Tutors are there to give personal support to the students to help not just their academic development and also emotionally What most teachers cannot do is…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students believe in themselves. Sometimes they know more than they think—they just need someone to encourage them and show them they’re capable. And remind students that learning is a process. A tutor should focus on progress, not perfection, and celebrate the small wins along the…

I think the most important things that a tutor can do is to instil in students the drive to learn more about a subject, fix any misconceptions they may have, and to make them feel comfortable enough to ask any questions they have. I think my strengths come from finding gaps in a student’s knowledge and using appropriate measures to rectify them.…

A tutor can play a very important role in motivating the student so that he can understand and achieve. Thus, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instilling a strong belief in them that they can achieve whatever they want, provided they are giving their best. I think that the tutor acts as a mentor for the student. In this role, the tutor should encourage the students to think critically in order to find answers to their questions. By providing the means to discover the answers for themselves, the tutor ensures that the student does not merely address the 'what' of the question but is also able to…

The most important things a tutor can do to a student is to not teach, but to make them understand what is being taught, and thereby boost their confidence. Merely parroting out concepts to students would get the job done, but will not help the student understand any better, or feel any more confident. Instead, understanding where the student is…

Inside Burwood EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex worked on two-digit by two-digit multiplication and progressed to division with remainders, often tackling worded problems for extra practice.

In Year 11, Keshara revised domain and range questions from the Methods syllabus and completed exam-style problems on transformations, including hyperbolas and parabolas.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Arjun focused on chemical analysis techniques such as IR and NMR spectrometry, alongside interpreting mass spectrometry data through targeted textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, a student "forgot to bring his SAC for review," missing a chance to address feedback before the next assessment.

In Year 8 English, homework was incomplete and spelling lists left at home, which meant less progress on writing structure and vocabulary.

A Year 12 Chemistry student's practical report was difficult to follow due to disorganised notes and uncollated results, slowing down her analysis.

Meanwhile, in Year 3–4 Maths, several students continued relying on finger counting instead of memorising times tables—"he still used hands for addition," one tutor noted—which made mental calculations slow during problem-solving.

Recent Achievements

A Burwood East tutoring session saw a Year 3 student, previously hesitant with larger multiplication problems, now requesting to tackle three-digit by two-digit questions and confidently working through each step without relying on memorisation alone.

In Year 11, one student who used to wait for explanations has started proactively asking questions about complex transformation topics, using this initiative to deepen his understanding—especially noticeable during recent exam preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 biology student put together her own practical report-writing guide after struggling with structure earlier in the term, now referring back to it independently while planning new assignments.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Vermont South Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burwood East Primary School.
