I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and empathetic with them. Learning from a tutor can be frustrating and tiresome, especially when the student is not getting it right. A tutor should have the ability to carry the student through this, encouraging and motivating them to achieve their best academic…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is understand the needs of each student and adapt their teaching style in order to maximise the benefits that the student can get from tutoring. I've had my fair share of tutors growing up and the best tutors I've had weren't necessarily the most intelligent. They were empathetic individuals…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil genuine love for a particular subject. When a student really enjoys a subject they are more motivated to learn and excel in that subject. Also I think a tutor needs to be approachable and friendly so that the student can easily approach them whenever they face an academic…

A great tutor does more than explain content — they build confidence. The most important things a tutor can do are listen carefully, adapt to the student’s learning style, and create a safe space where questions feel welcome. Empathise, empathise, empathise! I think tutors have to put themselves in their tutee's shoes and understand how they might respond and grasp to teaching approaches and concepts, tailoring their teaching around it. A teacher's predominant responsibility is to TEACH, which demands building a personal relationship with the tutee; proficiency in a…

Being the middle ground between self-learning and learning in a classroom. A tutor not only teaches but functions as an advisor of sorts because a tutor was once or still is a student. Inside Cabramatta WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Elena focused on interpreting column graphs for data analysis and simplifying algebraic expressions by collecting like terms, also practising angle relationships such as supplementary angles.

Year 7 student Madison worked through solving linear equations in one variable (solving for x) and reviewed exterior angles in triangles with targeted practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Arabella developed her understanding of multiplication techniques using repeated addition and arrays, building a solid foundation for more advanced number work.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, she jumped straight to the answers and made mistakes, especially with negative numbers, as noted by her tutor.

Homework was sometimes incomplete or done in the wrong notebook, causing confusion and missed feedback opportunities.

In Year 5, avoiding multiplication tasks led to skipped practice and slow progress; she often tried to bypass hard questions without reading them fully ("refused to do her school homework...thinking it too hard").

Across Years 4–10, messy written work and inconsistent use of strategies meant calculation errors persisted—particularly when pressured or unconfident—leaving concepts like fractions and area formulas half-remembered at test time.

Recent Achievements

One Cabramatta West tutor saw a Year 11 student who used to freeze up with simultaneous equations now tackle bivariate data questions independently, even checking her work for errors—a big step from needing constant prompts.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student showed new initiative by re-opening her tutoring notebook mid-lesson to look up past fraction strategies instead of waiting for help, something she never tried before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who struggled with time-telling surprised her tutor by reading both analogue and digital clocks accurately without guidance and even drew the clock faces herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Whitlam Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Harrington Street Public School.
