One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is providing assistance in their work. A tutor has to able to explain the concepts in a particular topic very clearly and confidently. This includes answering any questions the student may have. It is also very important for the tutor to be able to target the areas where the student…

As I have noticed with most of my tutors, they usually teach me by making me remember a methodology systematically, thus when there is a slight variation in the question it would stump me. That is why, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to not manufacture students into robots that only remember specific methods for generic…

I genuinely believe that a good Tutor is someone who can provide you with all the tools to grasp a concept- and then have the patience to teach the certain concept in various ways until the student fully comprehends. A great tutor will understand the students needs and worries, and address them in a friendly manner. I am a friendly and…

An ability to understand the personal needs of the student in order to tailor the learning to their particular mind and way of thinking as opposed to getting stuck using one method of teaching only. Also, developing a trusting relationship between the student and tutor as it can feel disempowering when you cannot grasp a concept, and the ability…

I think that a tutor can help a student in every way. A tutor can allow the student to develop socially, mentally and philosophically. I think i can understand a student's mindset. Help them gain confidence, and for them to do the best they can. Students that require tutoring are often ones that lack confidence in a subject area. Tutors are there to strengthen and encourage them. Breaking down difficult concepts and passing on my knowledge to students. Also, finding where a student has difficulty and working with them to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is equipping the student with the resources and tips they need to be able to be good and excel at a subject. Especially in english, it is important for the student to have the knowledge and analytical way of thinking to really excel and i think once they have been taught how to think this way they…

Inside Calder ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Aryan worked on representing and interpreting data using different types of graphs, then explored measures of centre including mean, median, mode, and range.

In Year 8, Jake focused on algebraic expressions—learning how to collect like terms and expand brackets step-by-step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah practised applying the Pythagoras theorem to solve problems involving right-angled triangles and was introduced to basic trigonometry concepts like sine, cosine, and tangent using SOH CAH TOA.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students faced challenges with test-taking processes, especially under timed conditions in mathematics.

For example, one Year 10 student "needed more practice being focused on task and timed," leading to rushed working during trigonometry revision.

A Year 8 learner struggled with interpreting worded problems—"difficulty understanding certain words" left some questions unanswered in assessments.

At the primary level, another student hesitated with multiplication tables when put under test pressure, slowing down progress through number facts.

In Year 12, over-reliance on a CAS calculator caused hesitation recalling formulas without support; confidence wavered as unfamiliar topics appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Calder Park tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who used to freeze when facing trigonometry questions—last session, she confidently identified opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse sides and could calculate missing angles with little prompting.

In Year 11, another student showed new independence by spotting algebraic errors on his own and fixing them immediately, rather than waiting for guidance as he did before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had previously needed step-by-step help surprised her tutor by working through mixed fraction addition solo and checking her own answers for mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sydenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Overnewton Anglican Community College - Canowindra Campus.
